Having visited the African Savanna, I eagerly awaited Marianne Berkes new book, “Over in the Grasslands.” I was not disappointed. Marianne clearly understands children and how to disguise learning into a story. All of her “over books” are full of descriptive verbs and adjectives that are fun to act out. This book is home to a diverse selection of creatures and Marianne provides an in depth description of these animals in the back of the book. She also provides older students a springboard of ideas for further research. The artwork by Jill Dubin compliments the story well. Jill provides tips in the back of the book and she explains how she combines color, texture and pattern to convey the beauty of the African Savanna and the animals that live within the Savannah. I highly recommend adding this book to your collection, it is truly an overall winner.
