Mandy awoke in darkness. For a moment she didn't remember that Angel was gone, that she would not be coming back, and then the pain hit her like a physical blow.

For the first time in her eleven years, Mandy is alone. Through a series of miscommunications, her entire family has left her by herself in their big house on Lake Michigan. But it's the absence of her twin sister, Angel, that she feels the most. One year ago Angel died, and Mandy's life has been at a standstill ever since. While the rest of her family has moved on, Mandy clings to the pain of her loss.

At first Mandy is almost relieved to have the time to herself. But quickly the loneliness consumes her — until she stumbles upon two boys, one her age, the other not yet two, who are also on their own. Running away from men who wish to do them harm, the boys turn to Mandy for help. But what can she do for these boys when she can barely take care of herself? If only Angel were here, she would know what to do.

In her final book, Willo Davis Roberts proves once again why she is considered one of the greatest mystery writers for young readers. The One Left Behind is a haunting tale of loss, love, and — ultimately — hope.

This book is awesome, but it seemed rushed. The action didn't start until the end of the book, then done, you start to hit the good part then, well you know. If it's okay, well I think maybe Mandy and Zander should have been locked in the bathroom, and had been screaming for help. But all and all, this was the best childrens book I've EVER read.

This is an amazing book. It's very short, only about 100 or more pages. I finished it withing one day. When I read this book, I can easily picture Mandy and her dog Herry together. I love this book. I recommend it to everyone.

This is Roberts last book, published after she died. I get the feeling there was supposed to be more to it, because it seems a little incomplete. However, I've only read a couple of her other books and one I don't really remember well. The One Left Behind is the fairly straight-forward tale of a girl who is accidentally left alone in her house for a weekend by her large family. (Home Alone, much?) She encounters a kid and his little brother who are on the run from some bad men and helps them escape. Also, she had a twin sister who died and her uncle has schizophrenia. These last two are the elements that seem like they should have been developed more. Interestingly, the schizophrenic character is very realistic, as though the author has some first hand experience with a person living with that particular mental illness. The story climaxes and ends rather abruptly and there is no real twist involved. Mandy is a very sympathetic character and is well developed, although almost too introspective. No one else gets much dynamism to their character and I think that's what makes the book feel kind of flat. If you're looking for a good book by this author, try The Girl with the Silver Eyes.

This book is one of my favorites. It's so sad, because in the very beginning it says Mandy's twin, Angel, was dead! The whole book is based on how Mandy does everything thinking what would Angel do? A sad, but amazing story.

It's been a long time since I've read this book, and one things still stays with me.  Near the end when things start getting intense it feels like the author wanted to write something dramatic and twisted, but then remembered it was a childrens book and cut it out. When the 2 characters Mandy and Zander are captured by the bad guys, they make it obvious they plan to kill them.  I remember sitting up in my bed when I got to this part and flipping the pages excitedly.  And then...nothing.  I thought I'd perhaps skipped a page or a page had been torn out of my library copy, but as I read on I saw that the characters were saved not 5 minutes after being captured and the bad guys arrested.  Now, I was 12 at the time and I knew that kidnap victims are almost NEVER that lucky.  I was hoping they'd take it upon themselves to at least put up a fight and the sound would cause someone to call the police.  Nope, the police just happen upon them before anything happens. I feel I would have far better enjoyed the book if there was more action.  I remember even writing in a part that would go between the pages leading up to the ending.

I am a twin and I found the way she depicted the relationship of the two was so real. That bond that twins have is unbreakable, and the truth about how they isolate themselves from the rest of the world is completely true. You don't think you need any other friends when you have a twin. I thought it was exciting and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I read it in two days. It is a short but enjoyable book!
