Alyssa Cole returns with a fun, sexy romance novella in the Reluctant Royals series!

While her boss the prince was busy wooing his betrothed, Likotsi had her own love affair after swiping right on a dating app. But her romance had ended in heartbreak, and now, back in NYC again, she’s determined to rediscover her joy—so of course she runs into the woman who broke her heart.

When Likotsi and Fabiola meet again on a stalled subway train months later, Fab asks for just one cup of tea. Likotsi, hoping to know why she was unceremoniously dumped, agrees. Tea and food soon leads to them exploring the city together, and their past, with Fab slowly revealing why she let Likotsi go, and both of them wondering if they can turn this second chance into a happily ever after.

Seven months ago in the spring, Likotsi met Fab and her world was turned upside down. A chance ‘swipe right’ on a dating app when she had been ordered to take a day off by her boss the Prince, she’d chanced a note to Fabilola, and the two found instant chemistry, a connection and for Likotsi, love was in the air. Sure with her job, that she didn’t yet dare to speak on, things would be difficult, and long distance isn’t a great option, but she found Fab intriguing and beautiful and, most surprisingly, wanted to know more about her. But, with all the plans made for her return to her work and her skill with managing and organizing every detail, she wants to manage the budding relationship, even as she fears that her imminent departure could make things more difficult. But, she never expected the “I can’t do this” message on the night of the gala, or the silence since. For seven months she’s wondered why, thinking all she wants is an answer to that question, the answer that will let her move the past to the past, and start anew. Now she’s on vacation in New York, with a plan to ‘reframe’ memories in all the places she and Fab visited, a list of ‘things to do’ in her pocket, and a determination to use her new shoes to mark a new path. But a train halted on the bridge stalling her forward progress, and a photo and video sent to her phone bring Fabiola to stand right in front of her – a new version, but still her girl. Angry but unable to express any of the ‘cutting’ lines she had spent the past 7 months reciting to herself, she only wants to know why, in the hopes it will bring her closure. Enchanted by the exuberance, yet still desperate for her answers, the two spend a day together, her following Fab through a series of places unknown to tourists: a museum in a freight elevator, a meditation studio, a carousel comprised of gloriously colored sea creatures…. It takes hours for Fab to explain why she stopped all contact, even though it’s clear that nothing has been the same for her either in the past months. The connection is still there, they’ve only got to take that one step toward trusting in one another, and everything else: distance, choices, history, can fall to the background. Intriguing and engaging for the view of Likotsi - the one person who seemed to manage and ‘rein in’ and often difficult to manage Prince, with her own insecurities and how she handles a situation where she, of all people, has ignored her own ‘what should be done’ advice to get to an answer. She’s always been a standout character, and her rather formal demeanor could lead readers to think she’s always a bit removed and remote, proper to the nth degree, but there’s a heart deserving of and desiring love and happiness, and perhaps only those closest to her ever see that side. A wonderful teaser while we wait for the next in the series. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

2.5 stars. A very quick read. It was steamy enough, I just couldn't being myself to care for either Likotski or Fab. Definitely not my favorite story in this series.

This has such an interesting set up! It's told in the third person limited POV and alternates between following Likotsi in chapters that take place in the present (Winter) and then Fab in chapters that are a sort of flashback to when they met (The Previous Spring). Normally I'm not a fan of a dual timeline/storyline, but as this is a novella the timeframe for the Winter chapters is only a day or so and The Previous Spring is not so very much longer before they're parted, the way Likotsi and Fab's story unfolds is really sweet, surprising, and poignant. Alyssa Cole makes it work! I really loved Likotsi's sharp taskmaster meets fashion-plate self in A Prince in Theory, and it was great to see her get her own story. And then there's Fab, with her pin-up girl style, big dreams, and a bit of a broken heart. Her change in circumstances between her Previous Spring self and her Winter self is rather jarring, and I really felt for her. I didn't really like her much at first, but as the story unfolds my heart really went out to her and I just wanted to push the two of them together and go "Aww, well go on then, kiss and make up!" Their chemistry together in the Previous Spring chapters is adorable and sexy, and then the way they are together in Winter caused my physical pain. For fictional characters that only exist on paper, and not even in a full book! In a novella! That, my friends, is good writing. This is a novella that takes place in the middle of the Reluctant Royals series and is book 2.5, and it can be read as a stand alone... I think. The Previous Spring chapters take place concurrently with the events in book 1 in the series, A Prince in Theory, and I'd gotten a pretty definite picture of Likotsi in my head reading that book, so I can't give a completely unbiased opinion on whether a reader who hasn't read A Prince in Theory can come into this book without reading any others in the series and read it purely as a standalone, but I'm thinking that yes, you could, without missing too much. That being said, the other books in the series are also really great and definitely worth a read. This book also includes a sneak peak at the first chapter of the next book in the series, A Prince on Paper, and OH MY GOSH, can it please be April so I can read this book?! This whole series is fire.

I wasn't originally review this because it was a novella, but it was so well written it felt like a full length story. A story I didn't know I needed until I started reading it. Such a nice back story that I hope to see revisited in the next installment of the series. First off, I LOVED the characters. Likotsi was so SMOOTH y'all! lol She was trying to act like she had no game, but with her dressing skills and the way she was talking to Fab in the flashbacks, I was wondering how Fab was able to ever say no to her. As for Fab, I also liked her. She was goal oriented all on her own and she was so strong. For so many reasons. The two of them together is a definite power couple. As for the plot, I liked that it went back and forth from the past and present. It was interesting to see the differences in how they interacted then vs right now. Even after all they had both gone through, their relationship was so easy. It continued right where it left off. It was such a sweet thing to witness. As for the romance, I liked the slow burn. Cole spent most of the novella just giving us their background story with little to no kissing. Which makes the part at the end where they were together so much more special. This novella definitely helped ease the pain for the next book! The next one is where we meet is Nya and Johan and let me just tell you, I am READY for the drama that's about to bring.

Likotsi gets her second chance at the love she left behind (from book one). We get to see another side of Likotsi. She still polished, sophisticated, dedicated, but this time around she gets a second chance. She finally learns why things happened the way they did when she was in New York last. We get to see the woman that dimmed the light that had Likotsi shined brightly before she left New York. The meeting of Fab at the beginning was different and interesting. I found depth to the levels she showed and the way she was revealed to the reader. I found this to be a wonderful addition to the entire series. It help to fill in a few blanks and maybe gave a few hints of more to come. I'm excited to get to the next book of this series. I found the included first chapter to be very alluring. I want to see the next adventure of the circle of friends and family.
