Told with Baldwin's characteristically unflinching honesty, this collection of illuminating, deeply felt essays examines topics ranging from race relations in the United States to the role of the writer in society, and offers personal accounts of Richard Wright, Norman Mailer and other writers.

This is a magnetic book. Whenever I leaf through it again, I get the feeling I have to reread it once more. Read this, for example: "...[T]he American equation of success with the big times reveals an awful disrespect for human life and human achievement. This equation has placed our cities among the most dangerous in the world and has placed our youth among the most empty and most bewildered. The situation of our youth is not mysterious. Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them. They must, they have no other models. That is exactly what our children are doing. They are imitating our immorality, our disrespect for the pain of others."My copy is a gift from one of my sisters, who wrote inside, "My favorite author." I believe I know why.
Hello. You want to join me and train to be a ruthless killer? Hope you are ready for it. This life is not for those who are weakhearted. First off, we do have a code. Never kill a fellow killer out of fights for rankins or appopriate fights to the death. Or if you have a death wish then do so. You will be hunted down and killed. Treated as a traitor. Traitors die. You abandon us you die. Ranks can be taken by fighting and winning. High positions will be to the death. Otherwise no killing in rank fightings. Now if you have a bone to pick with someone you c initiate a fight by pointing and slashing your neck. That is a fight to the death. Now that id all for rules. Oh. Disobey my orders? Try me. Ranks. Leader. Second. Third. Alpha. Predator. Prey. Ask for rankings in next book. Then post character here however you want to but no powers............I am of no cinsequence to you. Names? I am known by many. You can call me Blood. I am female. My appearance is how I appear. I have one red eye and one violet eye. And I have never lost a fight. I am trained in fighting and fight with instinct as well as technique mixed in. And just wath your back. You cross me, you blink and your gone.
