Overview

The poignant and fascinating story of a young man who is caught between the breakup of the traditions of a northern Japanese aristocratic family and the impact of Western ideas.

Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels himself incapable of understanding human beings. Oba Yozo's attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a "clown" to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

This book is effortlessly relatable in the saddest of ways. It connects with emotions and fears that people may not even realize they possess. The way protagonist (if you can even call him that) describes himself and his life is no short of depressing and pathetic. Somehow though, through all of the paranoia and somberness, you will grow to appreciate how he doesnt present himself as "the genius in a room full of idiots". I would suggest this book to anyone who can handle a book more focused on the character(s) as a being than the external action itself.

Feeling suicidal? This is not book for you. No Longer Human tells the story of a person who has to maintain a cheerful, chirpy attitude, while he is dying inside. Playing the part for so long, he no longer can identify his facade from himself, and thus, he is in despair.
