If you are looking for a pocket guide for butterflies to carry with you, you couldn't do better than National Audubon Society Pocket Guide to Familiar Butterflies Of North America. This guide "describes and illustrates 80 of the most abundant an widespread butterflies in North America. (p.6)" The photographs are simple and beautiful and useful for identification. Each entry begins with an introductory para graph followed by identification, habitat, range, and life cycle. The book doesn't provide maps for the range, which can be seen as a drawback.
