It demands a lot of audiences to pay full price for a series of Mozart symphonies released disc by disc when there are so many perfectly good ones available, but those by veteran Mozart conductor Adam Fischer and the Danish National Chamber Orchestra have repaid the investment, increasingly so as the series has gone on. Fischer's work falls into the tradition of rather dry, exquisitely sculpted Mozart, on modern instruments, that was exemplified in the middle of the last century by George Szell. There are quick tempos, especially in the slow movements, and in spite of that an extremely high level of detail. Check out the opening of the "Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K. 543," and listeners will be paying more attention to the timpani part than they may have in any other performance. The fast section of that movement and the finale of the "Symphony No. 36 in C major, K. 425 (Linz)," have an infectious kind of hurtling but controlled forward energy that has been missing from some of the earlier albums in the series, and the studio sound from Denmark Radio is excellent. In all, this makes one very keen to hear the grand finale album in the series with Mozart's mighty last two symphonies.
