About the Author

With more than 40 published novels and novellas, award-winning, bestselling inspirational author Ruth Logan Herne loves to write the kind of stories she likes to read... stories of faith, hope, love and humor... she lives on a pumpkin farm in Western New York with her long-suffering husband, a couple of dogs, some cats, a big flock of chickens, two miniature donkeys, a very loud rooster and constant visits from six grown kids and no small number of grandkids. She loves God, her family, dogs, chocolate and coffee... and planting pretty flowers during the upstate somewhat short growing season. And most years she likes snow... but not in March. Or April.

I loved this book, from beginning to end it kept me page turning, and enjoying. Whether I was laughing out loud or wanting a box of tissues, the author completely captured my attention. The writer gives us two coping and trying to go on with their lives adults, a man Matt a widower with three rambunctious boys, and Elle a divorced gifted artist. One alone with children and the other hurting because of her failure to be able to have a baby. Once you turn the cover you are going to be completely lost, the book is that good. I just never wanted it to end! I received this book through JustRead Publicity Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

Ruth Logan Herne writes the kind of stories that I like to read – stories with a sweet poignancy that will resonate with any reader. I’ve read two of her books this week, completely different on the surface, but with the same heartfelt emotion and rich, complex characterization. I’m not sure how to describe it, but there’s that special “something” that elevates Ruth’s writing in my opinion. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that, instead of standing on the outside watching the action, Ruth draws you right into their lives. More Than a Promise is a heartwarming love story with great chemistry and conflicting emotions between Matt and Elle, but it’s so much more. One of my reviewer friends, Kav, described it as “rollicking fun, achingly sweet and peppered with large doses of love and laughter” … and I’d have to agree. There are several laugh-out-loud moments, coupled with themes of forgiveness, overcoming the grip of fear caused by past events, and acceptance. Matt and Elle are sympathetic, appealing characters. Matt works too hard and long, carries the burden of financial responsibilities in the family business, is often clueless as a dad, but loves his boys with all that’s in him. Elle is the no nonsense type, willing to meet things head on, felt that she’d been “born the ugly duckling in a family of swans,” and brought laughter back into the lives of Matt and his boys. Elle is a most memorable character. I loved her wisdom, courage to confront, and her giving heart. And then there’s Matt’s boys. Todd, Randy and Amos just leap off the printed page and straight into your heart, making me want to wrap my arms around each of them. Todd, the oldest, is a lost soul and in need of a friend. Little Amos is gentle, kind and giving. But Randy “carried his anger like a coat of armor, still and unyielding” – and the way he defended a classmate was amazing. All three boys are heart stealers, and Elle’s gift for connecting with them is precious. I particularly loved how a good bit of this story takes place after Matt and Elle marry, for I enjoy going beyond the “I do” and seeing couples grow closer as they deal with conflict and draw nearer to God at the same time. The Catholic faith of this family is a very real and natural part of this story. More Than a Promise is an uplifting, true-to-life story that pulls at the heartstrings – an exquisite read. 5+ stars, best of the best. Highly recommended. Thank you to Singing Librarian Tours for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I loved this book!! I've always loved stories with single parents with precocious children and a love interest that can charm and handle those children. This book has THREE children, all with different personalities, and Elle manages to charm them all. I loved Elle's personality. She's been so wounded but she's still a fighter and stands up for what she believes. Although she hasn't had children of her own, she has worked with them and has a good grasp of how to teach them to behave and be respectful. She's got a big heart when it comes to children. And she has also not allowed her hurts to keep her from her artistry which the author describes wonderfully! I wish I could buy some of her art! :) I also loved Matt's character. A single father with the huge responsibility of raising three boys as well as keeping his father's business afloat, Matt has a LOT to deal with. He has a lot to learn when it comes to raising his boys and he's a little lost in trying to keep them out of trouble. But he's a hard worker and he loves his boys with his whole heart. When he comes in contact with Elle, he's a little conflicted at first because she stands up to him about the boys' behavior. But he quickly changes his mind when they respond positively to her. I loved how loving he is to Elle and how quickly he allows himself to fall in love with her. There was so much to enjoy about this book. Moments of hilarity as well as hair raising fear because of the antics of the boys. Moments of tender family interactions as well as not-so tender family interactions. And definitely moments of swoon worthy romance! :) *I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes. Mayhem and madness, love and laughter abound! Ruth Logan Herne always captures the intricacies of family life in her stories, and More Than a Promise is certainly no exception! The three Wilmot boys are rambunctious rascals, and their dad Matt has his hands full as a single parent and a business man. “If the Wilmots were a hashtag, they’d rock the “trending now” list daily.” When next door neighbor Elle Drake finds herself in the midst of the Wilmot chaos, her life takes a turn that she never expected. I enjoyed the humor and heart of this story and reveled in the relationships and romance that developed. More Than a Promise is another delightfully heartwarming story from a wonderfully talented author! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This was my first read by Ms. Herne and what an introduction! Matt and Elle both have baggage to sort through. Would they carry it throughout their marriage or let God handle it? Their actions is what made my heart ache and melt through their journey. This is a sweet read that will make time pass easily. * I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and it was an enjoyable book. I liked how the characters in this book were real people, they could have been anyone you know. The author's writing style was very nice and made the story flow easily. It was fun to watch as Matt and Elle get to know each other on a deeper level. The boys were great in offhandly playing a part in this without trying, but by being themselves. I found myself talking to both Elle and Matt telling them what to do. I just wanted them to be together as they seemed a good fit for each other. I loved how the boys were portrayed - it was just like all little boys I have known. I think that is the biggest thing I liked about this book. I said it once and will say it again. The characters were so real to life that it was easy to connect with them.

I LOVE THE KIDS IN THIS BOOK!!! Todd (“thoughtful and kind with a little bit of his dad’s protective nature”) , Randy (he could teach some adults a thing or ten about how to be a friend), Amos (oh, be still my heart with his widdle wisp)… even feisty niece Jenny in her brief appearance in the very first chapter. And along with the kids comes a lot of the humor. Particularly as poor beleaguered Matt tries to wrangle all three boys into church. At the same time. By himself. Needless to say, it does not go well for anyone in the vicinity. It’s a comedy of errors and awkwardness, topped off with Randy’s “Can we come again next week?” I laughed out loud at that. Matt did not. :) Speaking of Matt, he’s a lot clueless but a lot dreamy too. Elle makes such a great match for him with her practical yet nurturing personality. Neither of them have had an easy journey through life so far, and both have their fair share of battle scars deep inside. Having a front row seat as Ruth Logan Herne weaves their stories together with grace and romance is not to be missed! Delightful, warm, and charming, More Than a Promise is more than a love story. Or rather, it’s more than a story about two people falling in love. It’s a story of hope and faith, of humor and family, of blending lives, of second chances, and most of all it’s a story that points to the Author of all love stories and how He’s head over heels for us. You will instantly relate to these characters – whether married or not, single parent or multi-parent, or even just a “cool aunt” like me. Ruth Logan Herne has written another story that wraps you up in a warm quilt, hands you a piece of just-out-of-the-oven apple pie, and sits down with you on the couch to chat a while. (I received a copy of this book in exchange for only my honest review.)

Love this story by one if my favorite authors. The characters are each struggling with issues and they are so interesting and well-written. The boys are funny and entertaining, secondary characters were 3 dimensional. It was also enjoyable to see the Catholic faith showcased in the story. Total must - read for fans of Ms Herne, but if you've never read a book by this author, read this and you'll become one.

Elle Drake is trying to be content with the new life she's built for herself after her ex-husband's very public betrayal. Although she longs to have a family of her own, she's determined to protect herself and focus on her work. Matt Wilmot is single-handedly trying to keep the family business afloat, deflect his angry, meddlesome mother-in-law's threats, and keep his promise to raise his three rowdy boys in the church. Despite being artsy, athletic, and beautiful, Elle sees herself has plain and awkward and I know a lot of women can relate to having low self-confidence at some point in life. The young Wilmot boys tug at my heartstrings, mischevious schemes and all. I love Elle and Matt's story and I wish I could hop in my car and go pay them a visit. I'm adding More Than a Promise to my all-time favorites list and thank you, Ruth, for the unexpected surprise in chapter 26!
