Overview

The irresistible, indefatigable Miss Julia is back, turning the tables on a thief who chose the wrong belle to burgle. Don't miss  Ann Ross's latest, Miss Julia Raises the Roof, coming April 2018 from Viking.

Having earned a devoted following for her rollicking antics and unshakable poise, Miss Julia's eighth outing begins with an unfortunate discovery. Her cherished engagement ring-an exact replica of Princess Di's-turns up missing after a party, making her the latest target of a Florida- based gang who, according to Sergeant Coleman Bates, has been denuding Dixie of its jewelry. Incensed, Miss Julia packs Little Lloyd into the car and heads south to claim what is rightfully hers-and to show the feds that there's more than one way to do reconnaissance: selling the Good Book!

Never fear Miss Julia gets it done. No Pickens how about a Tuttle. A drunk one too, and Etta Mae, what a combination. Thieves and all, don't cross Miss Julia path and take something from like her engagement ring from Sam. Stay out of her way, but read and enjoy.

I first became familiar with the "Miss Julia" series during my college years when I stumbled upon it one afternoon while looking through the town's poorly furnished library (which is to say their idea of a library consisted of many shelves of romance novels and not much else.) Here and there I pick up one of Ms. Ross' "Miss Julia" books when I am in need of mindless, yet slightly irritating literature. The plotline is convenient, the characters are cliche, and there are times I couldn't stop laughing. I give this book four of five stars only because Miss Julia's mannerisms frustrated me almost as much as I'm sure they did the character of Mr. Tuttle (there are times when Ms. Ross takes the "prim, proper, old Southern woman with money WAY too far.). That being said, I know I'll buy another book in the series. :)

I have read several of her books. I like the way the characters grow in each book. This time Miss Julia takes on a drug cartel on her own terms. She is a middle aged lady from a small town. The book was a fun read. Her ideas sound unrealistic, but she sticks to her guns & carries them out. It's just a fun book for a summer afternoon. If you have the others add this to it, if you don't have the others you might want to read them so you can see how the characters develop.

Just finished reading my first Miss Julia book and enjoyed it very much. It was a light easy read with suspense. Excellent book for lazy days of summer.

While her new husband, Sam, is on a long-planned trip to Russia and her friend Hazel Marie is in Mexico, it would seem that Miss Julia would be at loose ends. However, when her engagement and wedding ring and Hazel Marie's jewelry are stolen by a gang of thieves, Miss Julia has plenty to do since her private investigator friend, Mr. Pickens, is out of town and is unavailable to take the case. Miss Julia and Hazel Marie's young son, Lloyd, take off for Florida after they learn that the gang's headquarters is probably located there. Miss Julia and Lloyd are soon hot on the theives' trail, with a little help from a drunken P.I. friend of Mr. Pickens and from the slightly trashy Etta Mae Wiggins. The Miss Julia books are among my favorites for escape reading, and this one is the best yet of the series. I'm glad I didn't read very much of it in public. I laughed so hard in places that I know I would have attracted attention to myself. It's not great literature, but it's well written for its genre and it's just plain fun. Here's a sample passage, with Miss Julia and Lloyd trying to cope with a drunken P.I. Tuttle:¿If he's not closer to normal by morning, we might have to [call a doctor]. The problem is, though, we don't know what normal is like for him. We may be seeing it now.¿¿It's got to be better than this,¿ Lloyd said as he gazed soberly at Mr. Tuttle. ¿All he's done is sleep and throw up, and I don't think that's normal for anybody.¿I nodded, marveling again at how incisive his mind was. He could cut through to the gist of a problem as quickly as Sam or Lillian could. This book might work OK as a stand-alone, but I don't think it would be as funny without a knowledge of the characters from the earlier books in the series. I recommend starting from the beginning and reading the books in order.

Eighth in the Miss Julia series and one of the best in the series. The madcap adventures of the first book (Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind) have returned. Miss Julia recruits Etta Mae and Little Lloyd to help her find her stolen engagement and wedding rings.

A good one! I liked it a lot.

I love the series, but I was having a hard time struggling through this one. I don't like that it gets that far out. No middle age woman would go after jewelry thieves. This is the only book so far that I haven't given 5 stars. The rest of them are that good. Etta Mae's worst baddest day ever which is new this month has been my absolute favorite.

3.5 Stars Miss Julia’s new husband and friend are each away on their own dream vacations, so she decides to throw a party to occupy her time. Unfortunately for Miss Julia, the day after the party, she discovers her prize engagement ring missing. Someone has stolen several of her friends’ jewelry too. Miss Julia is determined to get her possessions back, before her loved ones return. The search takes Miss Julia, Little Lloyd and Miss Wiggins on a wild adventure down to Florida in hopes of catching the unsuspecting criminals. Upon their arrival, Miss Julia realizes she must also sober up Florida’s most prominent investigator to help her go undercover, before the Feds confiscate her rings as evidence. Will Miss Julia’s plan work or will her items be lost forever? This book is the eighth installment in Ann B. Ross’s series, which contains fifteen titles thus far. The first person point of view carries readers on a wild ride with Miss Julia, which will allow them to feel everything that she is feeling. Ann B. Ross has created a pristine character full of southern charm and class, whom readers will adore. Since this book has Miss Julia on the road, it takes several chapters before the real fun begins. This is a delightful series for fans of cozy mysteries with a southern twist.  Notes: This review was written for the My Sister's Books bookstore.
