Michael Landon was a national treasure, and a true genius. He did in fact have a genius-level IQ, but aside from that, he had a nearly infallible ability to gauge what audiences loved and wanted to see. His TV shows tended to falter only when he wasn't writing and/or directing. This book is not a gossip-filled tell-all. In fact, his personal life is barely touched on, and commentary about his faults is given glancing treatment. Most people who are Landon fans know about him cheating on his wives, his tremendous vanity, and his heavy drinking, anyway. No need to rehash them, especially when the analysis of his work as an actor, writer and director is so interesting, and so well told. It also makes his death at the age of 55 all the more tragic. He had so much more to give.
