Using this book is a great opportunity to teach kids manners. Alfie, the Alligator, loves cookies. His mommy baked cookies, and instead of asking politely, he tries to grab one. She wanted him to ask politely, so she tells him to "think of a better way to get a cookie." What he does instead is not at all what she had in mind. However, he eventually gets the idea, and asks politely. This book has colorful pictures and easy wording.

Super adorable illustrations accompany this imaginative story about a little alligator that wants a cookie. Little Alfie tries everything to get a cookie, but his mom keeps saying no. Finally, with a little help from mom, he figures out that he needs to say please. The best part about this story were the illustrations. They were absolutely fantastic, and perfect for the age level. The word choices were simple and the text was nice and large to make identifying letters and words easier for beginning readers. There were just a few words to each page, making it a nice length and not too intimidating for a child that is just learning to read. Sometimes I feel like children's books get a little too preachy and try to teach a lesson too often. Most of the time when my kids or I read a book, it is simply for entertainment. However, the clever ways that Alphie comes up with to get a cookie balance out the "lesson" of the book so that it doesn't come off as overly preachy.

This book is perfect for toddlers to kindergartners who are learning how to ask for something. The drawings are colorful, Alfie's initial attempts to get the cookies are funny, and it has a sweet end as he finally learns how to ask for a cookie.

I used this book with both of my children. And now that they are older, I STILL say to them "Think of a BETTER way to ask." Cannot wait to share this with my grandchildren now!
