Overview

This Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition features a bonus chapter.

Meet Max—a very special dog with a very important purpose. Here is another irresistible tale in the bestselling series for middle grade readers adapted from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling novel A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey by W. Bruce Cameron.

As soon as he sets eyes on CJ, Max knows that she’s his girl and quickly figures out his purpose: to show her how to navigate the big city. Being a native New Yorker, Max knows how to take charge, even though he’s the smallest dog at the park. At the same time, with CJ’s help, Max learns that he doesn’t always have to be ferocious—sometimes, he can be “gentle Max” and make friends.

Young fans of Ellie’s Story, Bailey’s Story, and Molly’s Story will love Max’s Story, the story of a little dog in the big city. Includes adorable illustrations by Richard Cowdrey and a reading and discussion guide at the end of the book.

Max is a tiny Yorkie with a big ego in this tale, a puppy born at the pet rescue center, now desperately needing a home. Grace is a girl displaced to the big city, struggling to find the self-confidence she needs to succeed. And Max’s Story is where they meet—a dog with a purpose, finding the person he was always meant to help; a dog with spirit, learning slowly that spirit doesn’t always have to be loud and dangerous; and a girl with talent just waiting to show itself. Max’s Story is a middle-grade novel, set in New York, and told very convincingly from the dog’s point of view. The writing is warmly inviting, encouraging misfit readers to identify with the dog and understand how actions seem different from intent. Max, though tiny, is profoundly confident of his power, while Grace, the human protagonist and Max's designated friend, is afraid to trust her own talent. These over and under-confident characters must learn to work together in this tale, and the story grows to a satisfying ending (but don’t fail to read the “bonus chapter” which brings things really to a close). Wise questions and lesson plans fill the gap between last and bonus chapters in this small book. They’re helpful and well-designed—perhaps they’re inserted there to encourage readers to read them, and they’re well worth reading, though slightly distracting. Like I said, don't miss that "bonus" ending. A very fun short novel for kids and their carers. Disclosure: I borrowed this book from a friend.

We have yet another charming puppy tale from Mr. Cameron. I'm not quite sure how he manages to develop their personalities so uniquely, but it's magic. This is the story of little Max with his big attitude. An attitude big enough to help his girl find her way on the island of big attitudes, Manhattan. Full of humor and warmth, this story would delight any girl or boy. You may even find some artistic inspiration along the way from Max's girl, CJ.

Grab your favorite treat and prepare to get into a New York state of mind. Meet Max, the scrappy Chihuahua-Yorkie mix pup, who is on a mission in New York City. When Max spots CJ at the park, he knows that CJ is his purpose. CJ is in New York City for the summer and isn’t looking to adopt a puppy, but Max is determined to be with his girl. Max protects and loves CJ while teaching the other dogs he is the boss and no one messes with his girl. As the story moves forward you see that CJ is becoming more confident and Max is learning that it’s okay to be Gentle Max. I personally enjoyed Max protecting Sneakers, the cat, from Baxter, the menacing dog. This is a middle grade novel, with great illustrations that kids and adults will enjoy. Max’s Story, is the fourth book in the A Dog’s Purpose Puppy Tales series. Once you read Max’s story, you will definitely want to read the others in this fun series.

I just spent the nicest couple of days in the mind of a feisty little Yorkie mix named “Max”. Although it is part of the young reader series of books by W.Bruce Cameron, anyone familiar with his work knows what a gift he has for channeling the essence of a dog and telling us a good story through this innocent being’s eyes of love. If you are familiar with “A Dog’s Journey”, (which I highly recommend) you will enjoy getting more insight into the character of CJ. But as a stand alone story - Max is delightful and will definitely be a hit with young readers of all ages! If you happen to own a yorkiemix (also recommended) you will enjoy the added pleasure of recognizing the breed trait of being a BIG dog in a tiny package!

Such an amazing little guy who wants the entire world to know who he is; he is Max!!! And who is Max? A Yorkie chihuahua mix who although small in stature is huge in attitude. Max’s mission in life is to take care of, love and protect “his girl” , CJ, no matter what. I would call this relationship a made in heaven connection. From the first moment Max sees CJ, he just KNOWS that CJ is supposed to be in his life and nothing will get in the way of this. Considering I am a grown woman, and this is a book for young readers, I found not only humor, but it was a tear jerker at some points for me as well. I let my step grandchildren read a few chapters out loud to me and I could tell that they too had fallen in love with Max. I hope that you will give this book a try and you will find the same detail and doggie prospective that all of W.Bruce Cameron’s books have. Another winner in my opinion. Bravo Bruce!

It’s not the size of the dog in the fight. Having smaller breed dogs, myself, this is something I know all too well. Max’s heart is as big as the city he lives in. An entertaining story, geared toward younger readers, but equally as enjoyable for all who follow the works of W. Bruce Cameron, and those who just plain love animals. Another uplifting, instant classic in the A Dog’s Purpose series.

Such a fascinating story! Max will take you on a journey filled with joy, peril and surprises at every turn. Even the most reluctant reader will be captivated by this book, written entirely from Max's point of view. This is a great adventure aimed at young readers but with plenty of substance for those of us who are well beyond our youth. I heartily recommend this book.

Great book for young readers and adult readers! Don't judge a dog by his/her size!!! Max is an amazing "Little Dog in a Big City" who comes to the rescue in so may ways. He defies dangerous New York City streets, and all things larger than himself to protect his girl, C.J. Cat lover's won't be able to resist "Sneakers" and her antics. She and Max are adorable.....and fierce! I wont spoil the story but I will tell you that in the end, you will CHEER!!! W. Bruce Cameron has written an exciting, funny and timeless story. Ellie's Story, Bailey's Story and Molly's Story are also by Mr. Cameron and are appropriate for young readers, they are wonderful!
