With the understanding that some of the original fairy tales were quite dark and scary, this book goes out of the way to make a nice ending. The gingerbread man lives? It's a cookie!! That said, my kids enjoy the stories though they were originally confused with the endings. "But mom, you said..." came up a lot.

Unfortunately, a lot of the stories have been changed. I assume to make them less "scary" to children. I grew up with the original stories and I don't think they should have been changed. For example, Little Red Riding Hood ends with the hunter killing the wolf and cutting out Little Red Riding Hood and Grandma in the original. In this book it ends with the woodcutter, not hunter, "scolding" the wolf and the wolf letting Little Red Riding Hood and Grandma step out unharmed. A "scolding" seems silly to me.

My 3 year old checked this out at our local Library and the whole family enjoyed it so much we wanted to buy one. I'm so happy I was able to find it at Barnes & Noble. The illustrations are magnificent. This book has all the favorite childrens stories told in their traditional form. It is a must have for any young child.
