Overview

Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal).
If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.

This is one of the best book that I have read since Author R.A. Clark's book "When God Stopped Keeping Score." Just like "Keeping Score," it won't take you long to read this book, but I guarantee that it will have you thinking long after you put it down. It is a powerful guide to live by. I highly recommend that you buy both books.

A must read for EVERYONE No matter where you are in your career or life, you can still learn from the powerful insights shared in this book. I greatly appreciated the Heartfelt stories from this amazing naval officer. I will purchase multiple copies of this book for my sons who are serving in the USAF Thank you Bill McRaven for your service and sacrifice to this Nation. Your example makes me proud to be an American. With the highest admiration and respect

Short, riveting read. Ninety pages of leadership's successful habits and lifestyles. I'm happy that sugar cookies and circuses don't happen every day!

This book is a great read. Check out The Admiral's University of Texas commencement speech video to see what this book is about. If you love the video, you'll love this book. The book adds some depth to his thesis of how several little things can change your life and the world. His positive message will leave you fired up.

The first time I heard this speech it played a large part in my life. I work construction, and sometimes we don’t have the best of options or resources to accomplish our mission. Now after this read I’ve seen even more meaning to the words. They have been referenced for my troops and friends in rough times, and allow for a deep reach inside to grasp the toughness needed. Most highly recommended to all folk to read. Thank you.

I enjoyed reading this. It offers a reminder of how to make the most of life, but at the same time, it doesn’t really offer anything new or novel about applying these simple rules of living life. But, I resolve to be better about making my bed.
