Overview

A gorgeous country house hotel, a liberal dusting of snow, a cosy weekend away…what more could Lizzie ask for at Christmas?

Every Christmas Lizzie promises herself that things will change and she will leap into the new year a new woman. And yet here she is again, at the beginning of December and nothing is different. Her girls have grown up and left home, her husband Henry is slumped in front of the TV and she is alone in the kitchen, seeking refuge in the cooking sherry and talking to her Gary Barlow calendar. She’s also been very diverted by handsome new neighbour Marcus and she knows she shouldn’t be …

So when best friend Ann suggests a weekend away in the country, Lizzie jumps at the chance. Will this Christmas escape give Lizzie some much needed perspective and allow her to mend her marriage? Or will Marcus prove to be too much of a distraction?

A funny feel good festive read about rediscovering the magic of Christmas - just the thing to curl up with on a cold winter's night.

Lizzie's Christmas Escape: A Sparkling Feel Good. Christmas Romance by Christie Barlow, is the story of 40 something Lizzie Stevens who has come to a crossroads in her life. Her daughters Abbie and Freya are at university, her husband Henry works long hours and has no interest in her the little that he is home. As long as his tea is ready, that is all he seems to care about. Lonely and alone, Lizzie's only male companion seems to be the Gary Barlow calendar hanging in her pantry. With only her best friend Ann to help her see her value, Lizzie has become lost. For several years she has pledged that things will improve, but they haven't. Just as Lizzie has reached the end of her rope, handsome and suave widower Marcus Bowman moves in next door. He is like a cooling rain on a parched dessert for Lizzie. He says the right things, does the right things, and makes Lizzie feel valued for the first time in a long time. Is she being shown her value or lead down the crimson path to self destruction? In a very interesting, sometimes intense, examination of the humdrum of everyday life and midlife crises, Christie Barlow spins a tale that so many can take to heart. The number one lesson to come away from this novel with is the extreme importance of lifelong communication. Written with clear insight and understanding, Lizzie's Christmas Escape will touch your heart and tug at your heartstrings. I found it to be a most interesting book and do recommend it.

I rarely get overly excited about romance novels, as I don’t often fall in love with them, but I have to admit I loved Lizzie’s Christmas Escape from beginning to end. This story turned out to be so much more than I expected it to be. It was a book that just kept on giving. This is definitely my favourite festive read this year. Having said that, the story isn’t overly festive and could therefore be very much enjoyed any time of year. Don't be fooled into thinking this is just a light-hearted Christmas read, as there was more depth to the story than I was expecting. If I’m completely honest, I did fall for Marcus. A man who is tidy, loves dogs, likes building snowmen and decorating Christmas trees. What’s not to love? I highly recommend this to those who love romance, women’s fiction and family sagas. Lizzie’s Christmas Escape kept my interest throughout. I found myself thinking about it through the day and looking forward to reading it every night.
