About the Author

Part of the fun in writing, Donna Fletcher admits, is doing the research. But it is with her characters that she has the most fun. She loves giving life to fresh characters and feels their excitement as they face the pleasures and pitfalls of falling in love.

Donna's own adventures have taken her to England, Ireland, and Scotland. She has walked the fields where battles were fought centuries ago, toured haunted castles, stood where beheadings were commonplace, explored the mystic mounds of long ago, and collected a plethora of memories and research that will live long in her heart and mind. She also loves exploring and photographing old abandoned homes, and she often takes long walks in the woods with camera in hand. She feels her life is rich and full, having three terrific sons, two fantastic daughters-in-law, an endless supply of friends, a loving dog, and a crazy, black, one-eyed cat named Bear.

Chapter One

"You cannot do this, Reena," Brigid begged her best friend. "It is not a wise choice."

"It is the only choice I have." Reena stopped packing the cloth sack with the few food items she had managed to scrounge together. With a heavy sigh, she lowered herself to the wooden chair at the table in front of the hearth -- an empty hearth -- leaving the small cottage cold, though it was but early autumn. What would happen when winter set in with all its force and fury?

"The villagers are starving and there is not enough firewood for the winter --" Reena suddenly grew silent.

"It is not your fault," Brigid insisted. "The new earl has caused our hardships."

"True, but who in the village is strong enough to stop him from causing more harm? And who is left to protect you?"

Brigid sat and fought the torrent of threatening tears that ached to spill. "I cannot believe my John is gone."

Reena said nothing, the memory of Brigid's tragedy fresh in both their minds.

The tragic day had brought a horrible change to their prosperous village. All had been well in the small earldom of Philip Kilkern, earl of Culberry. He had been generous to the tenants who farmed his land, and the land had prospered along with the villagers. But two summers ago, the day after Reena had celebrated her twenty-year, the earl had taken ill and died within the week. With no immediate heirs of his own, his land passed to his nephew.

Peter Kilkern arrived in the village that fateful day in early afternoon. The sun was bright, the sky a brilliant blue and the crops grew fat in the fields, which meant there would be a bountiful harvest and more than sufficient food for the winter.

The villagers had gathered to share the midday meal, talk, laugh and hear Patrick Cullen tell a tale or two. They watched as Peter Kilkern rode in on a fine steed, looking as if he was prepared for battle, wearing fine body armament of leather and metal. He had dismounted his horse with ease and stood tall and straight, his six feet or more height impressive as well as the strength of him, his bulk being more muscle than fat. He had sharp features, his nose narrow and ending in a defined point, his lips thin and his dark eyes intent, as though with one swift glance he could take in all and know all.

Reena remained by her father's side, though he blocked much of her slim body with his bulk. She appreciated her father's protective stance, for she shivered at the sight of the new earl.

Peter Kilkern introduced himself and announced in a clear crisp tone what he expected from his tenants. "I care not how hard you work or what revelry you make, but my fee for farming my land will be seventy-five percent of all harvested crops."

The crowd had gasped, and he in turn had silenced them with a raised hand. "I am not finished."

The crowd's mumbles faded, and it was with heavy hearts they continued to listen.

"Tenants will not be allowed to hunt on my land --"

That was when Brigid's husband John spoke up.

"How are we to live?"

Peter Kilkern turned glaring eyes on him. "Who asks this?"

John stepped forward without fear. He was a large man in height and width, and handsome. All the women in the village had vied for his attention, but he had lost his heart to Brigid, for how could he not? Brigid was beautiful, tall, slim, long reddish-blond hair and the face of an angel.

"I am John, and we have lived well under Philip Kilkern's fair rule, and his lands thrive because of our care."

Peter Kilkern's voice turned harsh. "My lands best continue to thrive because of your care. And you will not hunt off Kilkern land; the animals are for my hunting and feeding pleasure, not yours."

John tried to reason. "Your land stretches far and wide; it will take days for us to reach land where it is permissible to hunt for food."

"That matters not to me."

"How can it not?" John asked. "Do you not care if your tenants starve?"

Peter Kilkern's dark eyes glared like an animal ready to attack. "You dare question me?"

Brigid stepped forward, her instincts to protect her husband, but Reena's father stilled her steps with his large hand and whispered, "Do not be foolish."

John kept his tone calm and reasonable. "Hungry tenants cannot work hard."

Peter Kilkern advanced on John. "Tenants work hungry or not." And to everyone's horror, and before anyone could react, Kilkern pulled his knife from its sheath and struck at John, slicing his arm open from shoulder to wrist.

"No one is to challenge my edicts," the man raged, his face red with anger.

Brigid screamed and ran to her husband as several men nearby reached out for John as he dropped to the ground in agonizing pain.

Brigid had worked frantically to stem the bleeding and to piece his savaged arm together. Fever soon set in, and within a week John died, after having suffered greatly. Everyone in the village had offered Brigid their help, but that winter proved difficult for all. There was barely enough food to feed everyone, and without game from the surrounding woods, many went hungry. Reena's father had gone hunting in an attempt to find food; he suffered a broken leg, and by the time he managed to return to the village, his leg had begun to heal, though not properly. Her father lost much weight, and now he walked with a severe limp that limited his ability to farm the land ...

In the sixteenth century Ireland, Reena Callen grew up hearing tales about the ¿Legend¿ from her father. Now a young adult, Reena worries that her village will starve to death due to the malevolent treatment of the new Earl Peter Kilkern. When a villager John challenges the edict, Peter has his arm sliced off and has other townsfolk killed.

Reena dresses up as a lad and travels to the estate of the Legend to gain his help. She displays courage as she asks him to defend her villagers in exchange for her precise mapmaking skills. The Legend Magnus accepts her terms. They journey to her village where he relocates everyone onto one of his estates vowing to keep them safe and warning Peter to stay away from them. As Reena and Magnus become acquainted they fall in love, but first must deal with the vile Peter who feels he has been slighted by the relocation of his villagers.

Though there is some confusion over the age of the hero, this delightful sixteenth century Irish romance is a fun tale that feels more like a medieval story. Fans will admire the courage of Reena and the loyalty of Magnus¿ best friend, but mostly appreciate the strength and responsibility shown by Magnus. Though Peter is so malevolent that he offers not one redeeming quality so that fans will want him to receive his just award, LEGENDARY WARRIOR is a fine historical that transports the audience into the past with an ease that reflects on the author. More works like this and readers will call Donna Fletcher the legend.

Donna Fletcher did it again. She has given us another cannot put down read. Renna is the type of woman you can look up to. She is not some timid, small minded girl, as some woman where in Ireland in the 1500's. She is an out spoken, educated woman. When her village is in trouble she seeks out a man known as The Legend, the man she grew up hearing tales about. She was told that with one look he can send the fear of the devil into any man. And Reena knows that no other, but him, can save her village. The legend is everything she excepted but he is also more. As she starts to learn more about Magnus, aka The Legend, she finds a man with a tender heart. She soon learns there are some things that he has not filled her in on. But as she learns the truth of everything from Magnus himself she starts to fall in love, not with just Magnus but with the man who also wears the mask. The Legend can strike fear into anyone¿s heart. Behind the mask though lays a man that is gentle and kind. When Magnus meets Reena he is filled with wonder. Everybody listens to his orders and heeds them well, everybody that is but Reena. Reena is unlike any woman he has every known and they share so many of the same likes. As time passes and he spends more time with Reena he finds she stirs him as no other woman has before. He soon finds himself falling in love with her. But somebody waits in the shadows, somebody who is willing to do anything to ruin everything Magnus holds dear. Will the secrets he keeps from Reena tear them apart? Will they overcome one mans vengeance? Pick up the book and find out. I recommend this book very highly. It is going on my keeper shelf. Donna Fletcher has done it again giving us another wonderful read and a story that will stay in your heart long after you read the final page. I recommend this book very highly. I do not understand how this book has such a high average rating, this book is terrible. It is so repetitive it's unreal, seriously, how much time can two people spend being introspective about such stupid sh#t?? Half of this book is the hero and his best friend talking about how strong and independent the heroine is... "oh, she was in a room that was dark and didn't cry, she's so strong and independent" ... "oh, she freaking breathed on her own, gosh she's so independent." We get it already. The other half of this book is spent talking about how skinny the heroine is. Like, the characters are obsessed with it from start to finish. "Oh, he'll never be attracted to me, I'm so thin" ... "How can I be attracted to her, she's so thin." What are we even talking about here?! Save your money, this book is stupid.

AWESOME - DOESN'T DISCRIBE THIS E-BOOK!! I have bought more of Donna Fletcher's books now because when you read them you feel you are right there in the midst of the storyline. I was late for a party because I couldn't stop reading. The character's are so strong that I felt I knew there joys and pains. Even the secondary character's are written beautifully. I highly recommend this book and you will want to buy more of her novels. I am so glad I discovered this author!!!

A hairless, pink kit scurried into the camp. He had a scared look on his face as he glared at the cats surrounding him.
