The Henle approach is truly a holistic one. Until I became better acquainted with this series of Latin texts, I couldn't understand how a classical education could be "Latin-centered" and still be complete. The author skillfully weaves in classical historical texts, character study, analysis of the "natural" and Christian man and worldviews, Roman and American government, and grammar throughout the series of four texts, particularly from the second text on. Because of this, Christian school teachers--and homeschooling parents--are provided with a genuine center that naturally connects with study for other subjects. Rather than having several disconnected topics, there is real potential for all study to be part of a rational, connected whole.
A little outdated, in terms of examples. The book uses the word "negroes" as an example of learning declension, for example. It was a little weird and funny to be able to get such a deep insight into the mind of the author, in the first chapter. First published in 1950's. But, otherwise, it's structured and organized. This book starts right away with the GRammar book by referencing it for assignments etc, so if you get this book, it would be advised to get the grammar book as well. Otherwise, you will have to skip some of those activities that include the grammar book.
