Overview

The new Chief Inspector Gamache novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author.

In this exclusive Barnes & Noble edition, get exclusive bonus content including Louise Penny’s descriptions of the real places in the books, along with maps of Three Pines.

When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder.

None of them had ever met the elderly woman.

The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional. But what if, Gamache begins to ask himself, she was perfectly sane?

When a body is found, the terms of the bizarre will suddenly seem less peculiar and far more menacing.

But it isn’t the only menace Gamache is facing.

The investigation into what happened six months ago—the events that led to his suspension—has dragged on, into the dead of winter. And while most of the opioids he allowed to slip through his hands, in order to bring down the cartels, have been retrieved, there is one devastating exception.

Enough narcotic to kill thousands has disappeared into inner city Montreal. With the deadly drug about to hit the streets, Gamache races for answers.

As he uses increasingly audacious, even desperate, measures to retrieve the drug, Armand Gamache begins to see his own blind spots. And the terrible things hiding there.

The character development wound with mystery, humor, heart and soul. They do not get better than Louise Penny. Start with the first in series and savor each one!

The storyline was well traveled. When I laid it down and returned never did I not know what was happening. Great story.

Another treasure of a read with familiar and new characters. How does she do it again and again?

That's what I think everytime I read one of Louise Penny's books; and in the last few years, I've read the all. Somehow they get better and better, the recurring characters more and more real and beloved, and the new characters fascinating. The plots are brilliant. Love, family, community, integrity and sacrifice. What a great world to experience through the magic of reading. Book #14 is another sparkling gem.

Her books are marvels, and I wondered if there would be more after the death of her beloved husband. I'm just grateful she decided to continue.

I'm a big fan of the Gamache series. I've read and enjoyed every book. Some more than others, which is only natural, I guess, since there are 14 by now. The previous novel, Glass Houses, was so awesome that I had my expectations set high for the new one. Unfortunately, Penny didn't deliver this time. Don't get me wrong! It's not bad at all! But compared to the last one, or some others, the story line this time was just so-so. Like always, it's enjoyable to read about Three Times and meet the inhabitants, even though they aren't necessary for the mystery. I think of them as old friends. They add flavor, but the story would have unfolded just the same without them.

Glad to share a little more of the story... always interesting characters, but Gamache is in a class by himself.

I've always enjoyed Louise Penny except the more recent books. Love a mystery and small town crime but don't enjoy ghosts and animals that share the story line. The swearing duck is taking a larger role in each book which makes the story unbelievable. And the characters, such as Ruth, are getting more outrageous. Sorry to say I find them annoying. Let me know if A Better Man goes lightly on these characters and I may consider buying.

Wonderful as usual. At first I wasn’t sure I liked it as well as GLASS HOUSES. But as the book wound down, I found how all the loose ends were tied up in a neat little package.
