Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In the epic next chapter of the Red Rising Saga, the #1 bestselling author of Morning Star pushes the boundaries of one of the boldest series in fiction.

“Mature science fiction existing within the frame of blazing space opera . . .  done in a style [that] borders on Shakespearean.”—NPR (One of the Best Books of the Year)

They call him father, liberator, warlord, Slave King, Reaper. But he feels a boy as he falls toward the war-torn planet, his armor red, his army vast, his heart heavy. It is the tenth year of war and the thirty-third of his life.

A decade ago Darrow was the hero of the revolution he believed would break the chains of the Society. But the Rising has shattered everything: Instead of peace and freedom, it has brought endless war. Now he must risk all he has fought for on one last desperate mission. Darrow still believes he can save everyone, but can he save himself?

And throughout the worlds, other destinies entwine with Darrow’s to change his fate forever:

A young Red girl flees tragedy in her refugee camp, and achieves for herself a new life she could never have imagined.

An ex-soldier broken by grief is forced to steal the most valuable thing in the galaxy—or pay with his life.

And Lysander au Lune, the heir in exile to the Sovereign, wanders the stars with his mentor, Cassius, haunted by the loss of the world that Darrow transformed, and dreaming of what will rise from its ashes.

Red Rising was the story of the end of one universe. Iron Gold is the story of the creation of a new one. Witness the beginning of a stunning new saga of tragedy and triumph from masterly New York Times bestselling author Pierce Brown.

Very few authors are able to take a book series like Red Rising which had a definate and wonderful ending and just seamlessly pull you back into the story. Iron Gold is a perfect addition to the trilogy and I can't wait to see where it goes. Thank you Pierce Brown.

Ready for the next one

When I first saw that the author of my favorite trilogy was writing a fourth book I preordered immediately, but as time went on I became skeptical. What more was left to tell? I felt that the only thing left to be wrapped up was clearing out the Core and diplomatic exchange with the Rim, and who wants to read hundreds of pages of mopping-up? When i finally got this book I sat down and read about a hundred pages; I stopped and put down the book feeling somewhat dissatisfied. While the original three books were about war and strife, espionage and battlefield tactics, Iron Gold looked to be about politics and family troubles. Luckily, I picked back up and began reading again with a new perspective. This really isn't a continuation of Red Rising, but something new set in the same world. That being said, when I changed my perspective and accepted Iron Gold as more of a "next series" I found it much more enjoyable to the point where I've been reading during my lunch breaks, after I get off work, in my freetime and when laying in bed trying to convince myself that sleep is more important than getting to the next chapter. I'm looking forward to whatever comes next from Mr. Brown, especially seeing as he seems to love a dramatic cliffhanger at the end of each chapter and at the end of his books. Here's looking forward to my next preorder.

Thanks to the publisher, Penguin Random House, for providing me with a Netgalley copy of the book in exchange for an honest review as a result of a contest! You'll have to forgive my language, but DAMN YOU, PIERCE. How could you do this to me? Rip my heart out by making the stakes even higher, making me care about even more characters in this incredible world you've built, only to leave fates hanging in the balance and the universe on the brink of an even bigger war? HOW COULD YOU MAKE ME WAIT FOR MORE? Okay, sorry, now that I got that out, I can take a breath and try again. DAMN YOU, PIERCE. Oh, sorry, there was more. Pierce Brown has done it again. First, in the original trilogy, he built a world from the ground up, then tore it down spectacularly. Now, he's upping the stakes and bringing more characters into the fold... more characters for us to learn to love, and leaving more of our hearts available for him to rip out and shred into tiny pieces. You've done it to us before -- you know the ones I'm talking about, Pierce. You remember what you did to us in the first trilogy. And you know what you're doing now. And you know that, no matter how much pain you cause me, no matter how many of my tears keep you fed and satisfied, I will keep reading. Because the world, the characters, the stakes, the loss... it's all worth it. You've made a masterpiece, and keep on adding to it in masterful ways. Dark Age can't get here soon enough.

Great read, looking forward to finding out what happens next, but not sure I am prepared for it either.

Would have given this book five stars except for the fact that i almost didn't finish the book. The book starts out slow and is somewhat boring. I kept with it because I enjoyedbthe first series so much. It took almost 60 pages before the story started getting interesting. Once the story got going it was great. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives that Brown employed in this novel. It's good to hear other voices in the story. If you enjoyed the first series then you will find this a worthy successor. Just be prepared that it may take some time to get fully engaged in the story. It's worth the wait.

This book... this book had me invested. Then I found myself denying what was happening, also understanding and then leaning in with rapt horror. New characters that are now family, and old enemies boiled down to another organism of dark and scary. Overall each one dons a mix of gold and bitter tar, daring you to love or hate individuals of conflict and some strange balance of good and bad.

I read all four of these books in a short time and I am obsessed the writing is so good and the story is so unpredictable, lots of plot twists you do not see coming. I cannot wait for the next one to come out!

It's in the headline.

Sci-fi at it's best. Highly relatable and at the same just beyond our ability to understand. So glad that Pierce Brown was given the opportunity to put his imagination on paper. He is one of the good ones.

A great book. I was worried it would cheapen the original trilogy’s ending but it most certainly did not.

Pierce Brown has offered readers the joy of experiencing his amazing writing talent. Why would we resist? After reading the initial Red Rising trilogy, I tried to read works by other writers. And my brain itched...I just couldn't get Darrow and Servo and Mustang out of my head! I said to myself, "Do I really want to pay $15 to continue the journey? Or should I end there at Morning Star?" But as you can see, here I am just a week later after posing myself that question reviewing Iron Gold. This is a different take on the series. It involves a bit of patience instead of roaring through from front cover to back. Iron Gold was extraordinarily written. Its almost four books in one but as I started to get the hang of what was happening, Pierce's design of going through the characters from their own view was easier as the book went on. It wasn't as easy read... I may have to read it again now that I have finished. Thank you, Pierce Brown. I really enjoyed tapping into your world outside of Earth. M.Cunningham in WV
