About the Author

Ambrose Bierce (1842–ca. 1914), American journalist, short-story writer, and poet, was born in Ohio, served in the Civil War, and then settled in San Francisco. He wrote for Hearst’s Examiner, his wit and satire making him the literary dictator of the Pacific coast and strongly influencing many writers. He disappeared into war-torn Mexico in 1913.

I finished reading this book on April 23, 1951, and I will never forget what a stunning impression the sories made on me. That year I read only 22 books, 21 fiction and one non-fiction. This book was selected as the no. 1 book read that year. I have never forgotten how much this book impressed me.
