In the summer, living in the shack was like an adventure for Hazel. But now, winter is coming and the nights are cold. Hazel is starting to miss her friends and her school. Rose is trying to do the right thing for her daughter, but everything is going so wrong. Will Hazel stay loyal to her mother, or will she try to return to her old life? About the Author

Deborah Ellis was born and raised in small town Ontario. She is an active anti-war activist and in 1997 travelled to Afghanistan to interview women in refugee camps. From these interviews she wrote four books: Parvana’s Journey, Mud City, The Breadwinner, and Women of the Afghan War. In 1999, Ellis received the Governor General’s Literary Award for her book Looking for X. Perhaps her best known work is The Heaven Shop, which tells the story of a family of orphans in Malawi struggling with sudden displacement as a result of HIV/AIDS. In 2006, Ellis was named to the Order of Ontario. She is the recipient of The Governor General’s Award, the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award, the Vicky Metcalf Award, and the Children’s Africana Book Award Honor Book for Older Readers. She is considered one of the most popular young adult authors today and donates almost all of her royalties to organizations such as UNICEF.
