While growing up, the only active R&B artist Trey Songz paid any mind to was R. Kelly. The inspirations were few, but this didn't prevent him from being inspired enough to impress Troy Taylor, a producer and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with Boyz II Men, SWV, B2K, and Whitney Houston. Songz was taken under Taylor's wing for a few years, leading up to this debut album, released when the singer was just 20 years old. While Songz is hopefully shaking off his obvious indebtedness to Kelly here (a couple clumsy sexual metaphors, some strikingly similar vocal cadences, a few jarring swings from pimping to praying), I Gotta Make It is both very enjoyable and full of promise, carrying a fine balance between throwback and modern hip-hop soul. You can always sense that Songz is excited to be making an album; he doesn't even bother to affect a distant sense of cool, unlike so many of his youthful contemporaries, which is a definite asset. He has all the personality and talent necessary to have a long, productive career, which is firmly established with this album. Others obviously believe in his future; he worked with Gerald Levert and Trick Daddy prior to making the album, and Aretha Franklin starts it off with some wisdom.

Trey Songz.........the image, the entire package is exactly what I've been thirsting for for a long time! He definately quenches my musical thirst, and I no longer have to listen to my parents Mo-Town collection to get the authentic sound that I've been craving for. Definately a sexy modern album with an old school feel. This album is great to listen to when you just want to un-wind. This one is most definately addictive. I could not stop listening to it! In my thoughts I mused, "Darn I have an hour bellydance routine to get to, but I can't stop listening!" "Dang! I have to do my yoga, but I can't stop listening!" Quite impressive for a break out artist!! i.e. (warning to the church girls) This album is very sexy! lol!

"I Gotta Make It" is a CD that takes R&B back to the realness it once has. Each song on this CD exposes the talent Trey Songz has to reach his listeners, writing songs of what he has went through and seen. The vocal and lyrical talents grow greater and greater throughout the CD. There are songs for everything and everyone with moodsetters like "Kinda Love" and "In The Middle" Trey helps the fellas say what they may not know how...and the touching song "From A Woman's Hands" asks the question "why is it hard for dudes to always be around," referring to fathers who chose to leave their family behind. The song speaks for single mothers, espcially those who have to take on the role of raising a "boy into a man" the best way she can. These songs, as well as all the others come together to make "I Gotta Make It" a CLASSIC!!!
