This is realistic fiction because the animals don't talk or act like humans. This is s desciption of the activities of Hondo and Fabian for a day. Dogs like to dive in the waves, and cats like to play with toilet paper (at least my cats do). The style of this book is effective for early readers. There is a sentence or two on each page accompanied by an illustration. The sentences are simple and short, but they are enough for the book.Media: pencil on watercolor paper

Hondo and Fabian are a cat and dog who are bests but complete opposites. One liked adventure and the other did not.My own personal experience I can relate because I stay to myself and my brother and sister are outgoing. An classroom extension idea would be to have students share things that they like to do for fun or have students bring pictures of places that they have gone for fun to share with other students.

Beautiful artwork. Written for the very young but my older son just loves it. He laughs at Hondo and Fabian's animal adventures and delights when they're reunited for the evening. A classic.

I am in love with McCarty's illustrations --- the roundness, the softness --- and the story is pretty cute, too. For me, the illustrations are what make the book art -- I could pull out pages and frame them!

This books amazes me by its simplicity-- which almost reads as a minimalist poem-- and it's soft, incredibly cute images of a cat (Fabian) and dog (Hondo). Animal and pet lovers of all ages will love, love, love this book.

This book is about Hondo the dog who gets to go to the beach and play with his friend Fred, while Fabian the cat spends the day at home. This book is very true to what dogs and cats actually do. The illustrations are beautiful and this is a very nice read.

Good read-aloud, muted illustrations, similarity in a day for two friends even though it is spent apart.

This was my favorite book when I was 3. Captivating and good for young readers to learn to read. This book is enjoyable and funny, with cute pictures and a smooth storyline.

Hondo & Fabian is a great book to read with or to preschool and very early elementary aged children. This book is not too long so you won't loose the attention of your audience, but it also has a nice, smooth wording pattern that helps young children learn how to read. I think this book would make a nice addition to anyones collection.
