Overview

An owlet hatches out onto Stormfast Island and into a world torn by war. For one hundred years, his people have fought off enemy owls from the Ice Talons, but the tide has turned. An invasion is coming, one the Kielian League won't have the strength to resist. Soon the tyrant owl Bylyric will rule over everything, and no honorable owl will be safe.

Only the small owl from Stormfast stands between Bylyric and total victory. Lyze is not very impressive to look at, but he has a wild idea for a snake and owl strike unit that just might give the soldiers of the Kielian League the edge they need.

This is his story, the story of an ordinary owl who rose to become Ezylryb of the Great Tree. This is the story of what it takes to make a Guardian of Ga'Hoole.

This novel is written as Ezylryb's memoir. It tells the story of how he came to be known to young owls as Lyze of Kiel, war hero. We also learn how this terrific character became an expert on weather, flying, and tactics. I absolutely loved the first 3 books in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. Who would have thought that a world populated by owls could be so interesting? Owl culture, owl humor, and owl power-mongering turned out to be fascinating. I read books 4 and 5, too, but the series really fizzled. With 15 books in the series, it felt like Kathryn Lasky was cranking them out without regard for compelling, cohesive plot. When I saw this new entry I rolled my eyes, until I saw the premise. Ezylryb's backstory!?!? Heck yeah! So I gave it a shot - and I'm so glad I did! Told as a first-person memoir, Rise of a Legend is a worthwhile companion to the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. In the initial series, Ezylryb fascinated me with his grizzled, complex personality. He was a grumpy old man who turned out to be a war-hero/genius with a troubled past. Finally, this novel lifts the veil on these mysteries, including some EPIC battle scenes where young Lyze saves lives while reinventing battle tactics.  Of course there are also touching scenes between Lyze and his family and, later, with his beloved. While these scenes fleshed out his character, they were ultimately a distraction from the real action. It didn't help that they had the feel of an afterthought. Although, maybe that's only because my personal interest was so much in the battle scenes. It was like a tease, "When are we going to get to the big battle?" There were several skirmishes along the way that kept me reading, though, so that's good. Bottom line - if you were a fan of the first few Guardians books, this one is totally worth a read. It has a nostalgic feel, like watching a fun movie that you haven't seen in a while. Although there were elements that were a bit underwhelming, Rise of a Legend still gave me the guilty pleasure I remember from the opening books.

"You will." He sings, "Do you hear the Whisper Men? The Whisper Men are near. If you hear the Whisper Men, then turn away your ear. Do not hear the Whisper Men, whatever else you do. For once you hear the Whisper Men, they'll stop and look at you." (I'll be back later.)

Ok its sad in the end because Lyze's mate, Lil, or Lillium dies. Tragic but a cool and wonderful book to begin with. Read this first and it'll make sense after the whole series is read. Watch movie after book. -Ms. Outlissa

So thats it. No more owls, no more wolves, now its horses? Im deeply saddened to see that there will not be any more Guardians or Wolves of the Beyond in the immediate future. I just hope that the author will write another series or at least another book about the wolves or the owls. I feel like she left the wolves series unfinished and I wish she would finish it.
