Work of letters rather that of history - not quite what I personally was looking for. I was interested in a historical birds-eye review of ancient Greek civilization , but the book is mostly literary reflections on the subject. Probably valuable for someone who already knows all about Ancient Greece, but confusing and frustrating for likes of myself. I grade the books as Buy and Keep (BK), Read Library book and Return ( RLR) and Once I Put it Down I Couldn't Pick it Up ( OIPD-ICPU). Sorry, but this one was OIPD-ICPU for my.

I first learned of this book from reading David Brooks's "The Social Animal". Hamilton explores the balance between mind and spirit as it exisited for about 50 years in fifth century Athens, between the Persian and Peleponesian wars. This balance created an estetic in the arts, philosophy, and science that has only been approximated since. That estetics was one of simplicity without losing the essence of the subject.

Jackie Kennedy gave RFK a copy of this book for a gift. As anyone who has studied him knows well he quoted from it often because it touched him deeply.

I don't know if I should buy this. I am 11 and want to be prepared for when I have to learn about this in 6th grade. I need some good suggestions for Greek Mythology books.
