Sweet story. This book has been around since 1963 (not this illustrated version though). Fortunately enough children read it through until the end to have made it a favorite. The adults who find it "negative" either don't read it all the way to the satisfying conclusion or just don't understand childhood apprehension and ultimate acceptance as well as their 3 year old does.

My son started Kindegarten this year and I was looking to find books that were both easy and challenging for him to read. Any of the "I can read" books and the Level 1 etc.. books are great for kids that are just beginning to Learn to read. We have dogs so my son enjoyed this book.

My 3.5 year old LOVES this book. He and I read it together. And yes...he reads most of the words himself.
