K-Gr 2-Each book introduces three to five tools used to perform a specific task such as planting a small garden or making a bookcase. Full-page, posed photos of a child and an adult using the instruments face two or three brief sentences about each implement and its use. Pictures that show a girl gardening and a boy making a bookcase are stereotypical. There is a serious flaw in Gardening Tools. In two photos, the hoe is placed blade up on a grass background, which is a safety hazard. Building Tools places greater emphasis on safety, although it moves rather rapidly from showing basic tools to the completed project. Neither book is a necessary purchase.-Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
