Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The perfect holiday gift—a one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience that sheds new light on the original film.

On May 25, 1977, the world was introduced to Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and a galaxy full of possibilities. In honor of the fortieth anniversary, more than forty contributors lend their vision to this retelling of Star Wars. Each of the forty short stories reimagines a moment from the original film, but through the eyes of a supporting character. From a Certain Point of View features contributions by bestselling authors, trendsetting artists, and treasured voices from the literary history of Star Wars:

• Gary Whitta bridges the gap from Rogue One to A New Hope through the eyes of Captain Antilles.
• Aunt Beru finds her voice in an intimate character study by Meg Cabot.
• Nnedi Okorofor brings dignity and depth to a most unlikely character: the monster in the trash compactor.
• Pablo Hidalgo provides a chilling glimpse inside the mind of Grand Moff Tarkin.
• Pierce Brown chronicles Biggs Darklighter’s final flight during the Rebellion’s harrowing attack on the Death Star.
• Wil Wheaton spins a poignant tale of the rebels left behind on Yavin.

Plus thirty-four more hilarious, heartbreaking, and astonishing tales from:
Ben Acker • Renée Ahdieh • Tom Angleberger • Ben Blacker • Jeffrey Brown • Rae Carson • Adam Christopher • Zoraida Córdova • Delilah S. Dawson • Kelly Sue DeConnick • Paul Dini • Ian Doescher • Ashley Eckstein • Matt Fraction • Alexander Freed • Jason Fry • Kieron Gillen • Christie Golden • Claudia Gray • E. K. Johnston • Paul S. I have to be honest; I don’t know how to review this book. With 40 stories by 40+ authors, spanning across almost every genre and style, covering the full length of A New Hope (and then a little extra), the book is simply too complex for a normal review. My notes themselves are in excess of five typed single space pages; there’s just no way to capture that in a few brief paragraphs. What I can do, however, is talk about the experience of reading this book. From a Certain Point of View is a book that is best read sequentially; while you can jump from story to story or hunt for particular authors there’s an emotional thread between the stories that has to be experienced directly. As you read, it’s impossible not to let your mind wander to the images of the film, and to the knowledge of coming events. You’ll feel pain for characters as they feel relief their family is safe on Alderaan, as they watch their friends go forth into a battle you know they won’t survive, or achieve a new sense of autonomy and purpose that you know is fated to end badly. Of course, not all the stories are gut punches; many are meditations on joy, trust, wonder, and love. More than anything, the book encapsulates a sense of hope and longing for change. When you finish this anthology, sit down and watch Star Wars again. It’s like watching a whole new movie. And that’s no small feat for a book written 40 years after the fact. I dearly hope there’s more like this coming from Del Rey in the future. If you want more story specific commentary, check out my progress notes on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1965434879).

Loved all of the different points of view of one of my favorite stories. Proof that any Star Wars story can be great... it all depends greatly on our own point of view.

This book answers many questions and provides deep insights in minor characters and events. If you’re not a hardcore Star Wars fan this might be a hard read but if you are, it will probably be In your top 5

Most of the content is good. Couple of great stories. One or two that I couldn't even get through. One from a stormtroopers point of view had so many anachronistic references and modern language that it just threw me out, not to mention it was written in a way that even a modern soldier wouldn't write much less a thoroughly disciplined elite trooper. The stories that respect the source material while adding something new were by far the best.

A bunch of bona fide accurate and authentic authors provide appropriate backstories to explain the actions and reactions of all the characters you forgot you knew. From the sands of Tattooine to the corridors of the death star, even the mouse droids have something to add. Loved every episode, I'm beginning to think the universe is so big it will never end.

Great stories that really bring some of the great Star Wars moment fully to life

This is my favorite book of the Star Wars Saga. What a genius idea; something so simple yet so very delicious if you are a Star Wars Fan. This is an inside look into the viewpoints of characters from different points of view; hence the title of the book. I thoroughly enjoyed this; and I should mention the fact you get the music and Star Wars sound effects in the audio version. I had a really good time reading and can’t wait to start the next Star Wars Novel. Very very job well done . Most entertaining Star Wars book yet...

A lot of familiar names penned the short stories in this wonderful collaboration. I was surprised (though maybe I shouldn't have been) that Paul Dini, legendary writer for Batman: The Animated Series, wrote one of my favorites in this book. Many of the stories fill in certain gaps and answer a lot of questions about minor characters and events that occur during A New Hope. Also, purchasing this book benefits a literacy charity.
