Overview

What is a fossil? Sometimes it's the imprint of an ancient leaf in a rock. Or it could be the skeleton of a dinosaur that has turned to stone! With clear prose and lovely, full-color illustrations, award-winning author and illustrator Aliki describes the different ways fossils are formed and what they tell us about life on Earth long ago.

Now rebranded with a new cover look, this book includes beautifully detailed illustrations and a find out more section with a glossary and activity guide so kids can create their own fossils for someone to find a million years from now. Author/illustrator Aliki has penned four books listed as "exemplary" titles in the Common Core Standards and is a widely recognized name in nonfiction for children. Both text and artwork of this new edition were reviewed for accuracy by paleontologist Dr. Kathryn Hoppe and by Dr. William F. Simpson of the Field Museum.

This is a Level 2 Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science title, which means the book explores more challenging concepts for children in the primary grades and supports the Common Core Learning Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) standards. Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science is the winner of the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Science Books & Films Prize for Outstanding Science Series.

Critique: Genre: This book is very helpful in explaining fossils to children. It is very informative in presenting accurate information in a way that kids will understand fossils and is interesting to them. It makes the information relevant to children in understanding how they could find fossils. Illustrations: The book contains pictures that help to explain fossils. They contain captions from children to help make the book more relevant to kids. The pictures go with the text and show examples of different types of fossils and what they might look like if someone were to find one.

Non-fiction Science Skill:In "Fossils Tell of Long Ago" by Aliki a very detailed description of fossils and where they come from is presented. The narrator walks the audience through why fossils are important and significant. Child scientists comment throughout the book in little speech bubbles and thought clouds. This adds a sense of connection to the material presented. The book is made for children in grades 3-5 and is very reader friendly. Although a lot of information is being presented, the material is very accessible and understandable. My favorite part of the book is a hint to an activity that could go along with the reading of this book. This book is very usable for a science lesson! The content is very scientific and seemingly correct. This paired with the activity mentioned would make a great science project!

Fossils is an educational book that makes learning science fun for kds. The book fossils shows step by step illustrations of how fossils are made. It shows the intricate process of collecting the fossils then perserving them. Also, it show kids how to create their own fossils. It's a very easy reader that kids three and up will easily understand. I love how the author makes learning science fun and entertaing. Will defintley recommmend to all teachers. Teachers could have their class create their on fossils, by making imprints of their hands then perserving it. Also, they can take class to museum to see dinosaur bones.

Excellent book for my dinosaur study. Children were able to understand what they were, we then made our own fossils.
