Fantasia 2000 [Original Soundtrack]

Fantasia 2000 [Original Soundtrack]

by Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Overview

In 1940, filmgoers were dazzled by Fantasia, an inspired collaboration between Walt Disney and conductor Leopold Stokowski. With the help of the fabulous Philadelphia Orchestra and a team of brilliant visual artists, this unprecedented marriage of animation and orchestral music became an instant classic. Now comes Fantasia 2000, this time featuring the mighty Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Levine. Designed for presentation in IMAX theaters, with their vast multistory screens, Fantasia 2000 boasts a soundtrack that's as spectacular as the images themselves. With an all-new program of classical favorites, including Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," Stravinsky's "Firebird" Suite, and Saint-Saens's "Carnival of the Animals," the Chicago virtuosos give high-energy performances bursting with life and color. Dukas's "Sorcerer's Apprentice," perhaps the most famous sequence from the original Fantasia, makes a special reappearance here, the hapless Mickey Mouse's plight made all the more compelling by the vivid drama of the new recording. If Fantasia 2000 is as successful as The Lion King, Pocahontas, and other recent Disney releases, a whole new generation of young people will be enticed into the world of classical music. What better way to welcome the new millennium?
