My son needed it for his 3rd Grade orchestra class and it follows the basic steps to learning the violin for beginners. This is the same book as the "Essential Elements for Strings" - which came in the mail. The "2000" version is an older print title and is no longer used. So if you get the "Essential Elements for Strings" book with the same ISBN #, don't worry.. you're getting the recent version. Just wished B&N customer service knew that as well. I had to call a music store to ask, which they new the answer to off the bat.
