by Russell Watson

Like Russell Watson's top-selling debut album, The Voice, Encore -- the tenor's sophomore release -- fashions a program that ranges from famous arias to popular standards to newer, classical-inflected material, all featuring lush orchestral backing. It's a recipe that has carried this rising star out of working-class England to international fame, helped along by boyish good looks, an affable demeanor, and a generous dose of natural talent. Listening to the well-known opera arias included here -- Puccini's "E lucevan le stelle" and "Che gelida manina" and Verdi's "Celeste Aïda" -- it's plain that Watson has done some woodshedding in the interval between releases. His Italian has improved, and so has the placement of his voice, which is darkening and growing in richness. Pavarotti he still is not, but "the voice" (he refers to his instrument in the third person) is certainly gaining in strength and luster: Just sample the classic Italian songs -- "O sole mio," "Volare," "Mattinata" -- for a taste of Watson in full-on Mario Lanza mode. The pop selections, on the other hand, show Watson's style-hopping skill. "You Are So Beautiful," for example, highlights Watson's gift for breathy pop crooning. Other tacks, such as "Va, pensiero" (based on the famous Verdi chorus) and Carol Bayer Sager's "The Prayer," a duet with Lulu, show Watson in both lights: as pop stylist and full-voiced operatic leading man. At times this contrast can be jarring -- the shift from a Puccini aria to the Lionel Richie duet, "Magic of Love," for instance, or from Verdi's Aïda aria to "Where My Heart Will Take Me," the faith-affirming theme from Enterprise. Watson clearly wants to play both sides of the fence, however, and is succeeding; Encore is sure to be merely the first of many curtain calls for this crossover star.

The album certainly shows the versatility of this young man's voice. I would like to see his next album without the duets and prominent background vocals -- just pure Russell Watson.

Russell, oh Russell. Encore is a delightful mix of opera and pop music. It appeals to young and old, opera lovers and non-opera lovers. Songs such as "Volare" and "Where My Heart Will Take Me" show Russell at his best. This cd should not be missing form ANYONES cd collection. Buy me, buy me...

I was pleasantly surprised with this CD. It includes songs that are sung in Russell's unique style. Some songs you will recognize, some will be new to you. This CD has such a different and unique vibe because it offers the opera, the lite rock, with some soulfulness. Really hits all kinds of moods! I am a definite Russell Watson fan after this!

The New Russell Watson CD equels or even betters the first(the Voice). It has the exact mix of "pop" and "opera" songs. "Va Pensiero" is one of the best(among Ave Maria) and "Is Nothing Scared" is one of the best english songs i've ever heard. Russell Does a very good job singing "Ave Maria" , hearing it makes me think i'm in some old europea catledral.

Russell Watson's second album, ''Encore,'' is absolutely wonderful as far as I'm concerned. This young man has done what few have ever done. He has captured the hearts and imaginagions of millions in such a short time. His delivery of a piece of music is thrilling. His voice is superb.

Russell Watson scores again!! Reviewer: Mary Buchanan from Salisbury, NC United States Russell Watson's Encore is magnificant! The fact that he can sing in two or three completely different musical styles, sometimes even in the same piece, is simply unbelieveable. His pop voice is mellow and compelling. His operatic tenor renditions are nothing less than soul stiring. I am not an opera "snob," but I do know a grand talent when I hear one.

What a gifted talent Russell has! Soft, passionate, and yet powerful voice that sings into souls and dreams. Never get tired of his style, classic but yet newly creative expressions! Highly recommend! Great find afterall!

Russell Watson has the unique ability to capture his audience, no matter how old or young they are, or what their taste in music. The unordinary mixture of pop ballads and classical opera makes this album perfect for grandparents and grandchildren alike! Of course, it¿s nearly impossible to judge an artist based on a studio recording, but this album certainly gives you a good indication to this guy¿s range. If you do get the chance to hear or see a live performance, don¿t pass it up! The album is brilliant but not as good as the real thing! The track that sticks out in my mind most is ¿Is Nothing Sacred¿ - it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! If you liked `The Voice¿, then you¿ll love this latest edition from Russell Watson. Encore, Russell, Encore!

I want you to know that I submitted a review. I had purchsed this CD online from the UK last year. I just realized it hasn't been released in the States yet. My review is for real. I went looking to read others reviews and realized then. Don't post this, just wanted to commuicate with you. Sorry. Lisa N.

If you already have the U.K. version of 'Encore' as I did, and are trying to decide whether or not to buy the U.S. version - go for it! The balance of selections is better and the additions are generally very good. The B&N track listing has an error: 'Catch The Tears' is gone, replaced by 'I Just Don't Know How I Got By,' a better choice. The abrupt transition to 'Aida' on the U.K. CD has been corrected and enhanced by the addition of 'The Bohemian Rhapsody.' That selection alone is fabulous and worth the cost of the CD. His duet with Lionel Richie, 'The Magic of Love,' is especially appropriate at this time and is a surprisingly wonderful blend of voices. I was classicly trained in piano & violin and realize that purists will have trouble with his version of 'Va, Pensiero' from Nabucco by Verdi, and probably also with his vocalization of some opera favorites. So be it. If you listen with an open mind you will have the musical experience of a lifetime. This young man sings with warmth, enthusiasm, humor, love and is a huge talent. Appreciate him for what he is - simply a great talent with a wonderful gift.

This is Mr Watson's second album. He has performed all over the world, and is very popular with the "people". He has a phenomenal voice, and has the ability to change the way he sings based on the kind of song he is singing. This album is a compilation of Italian standards and pop songs. The only drawback is that it was produced in the US, and you can tell "Hollywood" had a big influence on it. The orchestral swells are loud, they drown Russell out. Regardless, this is one of family's favorites. My kids especially love "Va Pensiero", "Volare" and "The Prayer". If you like Andrea Bocelli, you will LOVE Russell. Keep up the good work, just don't overdo the production. Please do not user backup singers. They were terrible on "Where my heart will take me [theme from Enterprise]"

Russell's new album is fantastic. I can't wait to hear the new songs when the US version comes out in October. I ordered my Encore from the UK last year and it was even better than his first album.

It is satisfying when a second CD by a promising artist lives up to the hype generated by the debut recording. This is the case here. Again, there is "something for everyone", classics such as "Volare" and "O sole mio" and "harder" pop numbers - including a stunningly beautiful rendition of "Is Nothing Sacred?" - and those glorious arias! "Che gelida manina" is as perfect as I have ever heard it and "E lucevan le stelle" rips my heart out. It is a rewarding CD with a song for every mood and need and you will want to play it every day. I thoroughly recommend it.

This is my second CD from Russell and I again have enjoyed every song. His voice is so clear, and I even think it has improved since his original CD "The Voice." His sound has made me an opera listener. I enjoy the way he sings both opera and pop tunes with such ease. This tenors ability to deliver the high notes as well as sing such songs as "You are so beautiful" is just amazing. It's hard to explain how his voice captivates you but it will completely. He sings with passion, enthusiasm and gives you a nice variety of music as well. I highly recommend buying Russell's new CD "Encore."

Russell Watson's first CD called The Voice was fabulous...Encore is even better! He is the most versatile singer I have ever heard. He does pop tunes like "Is Nothing Sacred" with tender emotions and believable vunerability. His operatic arias are powerful, strong, clear and show his diverse talents. And he sings with some of the best orchestras in the world like The Royal Philharmonic. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes a variety of music types. I have never listened to opera before even though I have enjoyed classical music. Russell puts such feeling and emotion into the arias that he has made a listener out of me! He has a rich and beautiful tenor voice! I have now purchased other opera by Pavarotti and Domingo, but keep putting Russell's CD back in the CD player....just can't get enough! The others are so stiff and formal. Russell is real!

Excellent compulation of both opera and modern songs. It is amazing that the voice on the CD comes from this young man. I've gotten 3 others hooked in the last few weeks and had to give my CD away! Can't wait for it to come out in the US. Check out www.russellwatson.com for updates.

This is a truly beautiful CD. Russell's voice is at its very best. His rendition of Ave Maria is just gorgeous. There is a fabulous duet with Russell and Lulu. There are some simply superb arrangements on this album. I didn't think Russell's voice could improve from his first album, but I think this album proves that it has! Do yourself a favor and buy this CD!
