Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.

Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin, is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills... or someone wants her dead.

About the Author

I've been writing fantasy novels and short stories since I was seven. I've been finishing them since... well, that's a more recent development.

I'm a professional blogger for my day job, and I live in the Seattle area ("area" is code for "I couldn't afford a house within twenty miles of the city limits and my neighbors have alpacas"). I have two vizslas who are as spoiled as most people's kids. Occasionally they let me leave the house to play tennis, go to the coffee shop, take a yoga class, or plot with co-conspirators on how best to take over the world. (One of those items may be untrue, but I won't tell you which.)

I definitely enjoyed reading this. From the beginning Amaranthe lured me in with her rigid way of following the rules, her strong personality and the subtle humor the author added to her character throughout the book. I felt like this book was a non-stop adventure that I couldn't put down. I enjoyed all the characters, but my favorite was Sicarius of course. He brought a sense of mystery and wonder that made me want to know what was around the next chapter. The story was fantastic with all the twists and surprises throughout! It makes me want to read more adventures about them!

Over 700 pages of a fun ride. A well trained assassin, military double agents and others out to overthrow the Emperor - up against a rag-tag group lead by an enforcer (police officier) that have banded together to save the Emperor. There is a touch of magic. People who enjoy mystery and intrigue as well as those that enjoy action or fantasy and good character and place description will like this book. It is a real page turner.

This book is amazing. The plot is unique, interesting, and keeps the pages turning. The characters are dynamic and loveable. I cannot put into words how fantastic this series is. Try book one for free and be hooked for the rest.

I couldn't put it down. Most stories now a days don't have this much action. So it is a great relief to read one. Can't wait to read the next.

Well, I read a ton of all types of fantasy and have pretty high standards for the genre, but I L-O-V-E-D this book. The steampunk-esque elements make it unique, though it keeps all the best aspects of traditional high fantasy as well. And I loved the characters--the #1 most important factor to me in enjoying a book. I really hope it will be the first in a series, and you'd better believe I'll be snapping up the rest as soon as they come out.

The Emperor's Edge kept me on the edge of my seat. It has the perfect balance of politics and fantasy, and the character relationships were amusing and believable. Even the unique character names added to the flare of a different kind of world where magic may or may not be practiced and no one can be trusted. Despite not being sure exactly how some names were pronounced, the characters' personalities fit well with their given names. Amaranthe, the ex-Enforcer and main character, was definitely admirable. She was a natural born leader, even though her efforts to save the empire had her resorting to illegal activities. She was extremely good with people and her new cohorts understood how focused she was. When her actions led to more trouble she never toyed with the idea of giving up or beat herself up to do better next time. She took everything at face value and learned from her mistakes. Her slightly skewed honor system made the story exciting. I can't wait to continue the EE Series, joining Amaranth and the Emperor's Edge as they work towards exoneration from Emperor Sespian. The story's undercurrent of romance gives me hope that there's more than just action and adventure to look forward to.

This is another amazing book by Lindsay Buroker. I absolutely love this book. They are long books, but they are not long and boring. They leave just enough of a cliff hanger to want to read the next one. I was never bored reading this book the first, second, or third time i read this.

This was the first book I read of Me. Burokar's years ago and I fell in love with her writing style. Well written humor and adventure without any overdone emotion. I just went back and began the series again a couple days ago because I missed the characters!

More like 3 and 1/2 This was an interesting one. I saw a recommendation of it on another site and I figured I would give it a shot....especially since it was free. The good: 1. The world created was very interesting: a steampunk setting in an aging old warrior Empire, where the elite are separated into castes, and society is in least when it comes to the role of women. In that society it is hinted that in the past women's main role was marriage and procreating, so as to make more warriors for the Empire and its many wars. But with the Empire on a slow March towards peace...that role...while still there...was changing and women were taking on more business roles, and becoming powerful in their own right due to that. There were also hints that this was something that was causing concern for the old guard. But even with this new found power and influence....women's role were still limited, and when we meet our heroine, she is one of few women trying to branch into fields not traditionally female and hitting the ceiling most often. So I liked the little threads of this struggle weaved into the story, and teased and something to be explored more later. 2. I enjoyed the main plotline. There was nonstop action from the beginning and it just kept moving. It made the book very easy to read---despite its length. It flew by because the main characters were literally....flying through the book from one action packed scene to the next. The best way I can describe the main action, characters, and feel of the to say it was a mystery/ Ocean's 11 in a Steampunk fantasy setting. A group of down on their luck characters that seem to work together well enough to get stuff done...and make you laugh in the process. I can't say I disliked any of the characters. They may fumble, bumble and fight their way through it...but in the end they pull it off. 3. I enjoyed the slow build and hints of romance. I do like romance, so any bit of it...handled correctly...will draw me in. triangles! lol. I see hints of it coming though. Sigh. The concerns: 1. Though I liked the group...they were at times on dimensional. The gigolo, the nerdy processor, etc, etc. I would have liked to see a bit more fleshing out of the secondary characters. 2. I did like the plot...but at the end I think it got a bit convoluted…too many revelations, within revelations and plots within plots. That could have been toned down a bit. It came across as trying too hard. That's about it. It was a solid read, and I enjoyed it enough to continue on and see what adventures this group gets up to next.

Received this book as a free read and enjoyed it. Don't let the length scare you though some parts could use a little shortening the overall story makes it worth it. Interesting characters and great plot. The only thing that threw me off was the title, a high fantasy mystery in an era of steam, I would rather the author just admit it was steampunk or stick with calling it just regular fantasy. I am going to pick up the second book now and hope that the good read continues.

I loved Amaranthe - she was a fun, strong female lead. Her back and forth with Sicarius was fun to follow through the book. I loved the adventure and thriller aspect of this book. The team they put together to execute their plan was awesome.
