Overview

Emma is Jess's little sister . . . and her dilemma. How can one small girl be sweet, funny, imaginative, playful, and affectionate as well as a clinging vine, brat, tattletale, and nuisance–all at the same time? Why is Jess supposed to be a good big sister while Emma doesn't have to be a good little sister? The highlights and low points of this sibling relationship are insightfully evoked in short and simple poems, some funny, some touching, and all resonant with emotional truth. Every child with a younger sibling will recognize Jess's dilemma and the combination of ambivalence and deep loyalty that is built into the sibling relationship. Nancy Carpenter's graceful illustrations perceptively complement Kristine O'Connell George's agile poems.

The story demonstrates the importance of family bonds. The art is well represented by the poems, but as for the poems themselves, I felt at times they were a little confusing to read trying to come from the perpective of a young reader. Not everyone has an eye for poetry, and I thought maybe this would turn a child off to poetry rather than inspire. Then again, perhaps I'm coddling.

Emma Dilemma is a compilation of poems from a big sister¿s point of view. There are poems of frustration, poems of hurt, and poems of joy. The reader sees that despite Emma¿s troublesome actions, she is ultimately unconditionally loved by her big sister. The theme of this poetry book is the relationship between older and younger siblings. This would be a good book for kids in similar situations to read and identify with.

A funny and sweet story in verse about the pains and rewards of being an older sibling. It reminded me of growing up with my little brother.
