A Roman warrior on a quest to uncover the truth about Jesus of Nazareth becomes enamored with an Israeli beauty after rescuing the woman from a violent mugger in this Biblical-themed period drama starring Dolph Lundgren, F. Murray Abraham, Max Von Sydow, and Mónica Cruz. A solar eclipse has cast darkness over the Roman Empire, and as the frightened population cowers in fear the earth beneath their feet begins to violently tremble. Having recently heard rumors about a mysterious Jewish savior who apparently transcended death, Emperor Tiberius sends fierce warrior Tauro to Jerusalem to solve a mystery that threatens to dissolve their empire. Upon arriving in Jerusalem, Tauro rescues a young beauty named Tabitha and her frail grandmother from a menacing street criminal. But Tabitha is forbidden to look at Romans - much less speak to them - and now after entering into a forbidden romance with Tauro the end of an era fast approaches.

This year while looking for an inspirational movie pre-Easter, I saw this & thought, why not? The plot creatively commemorates the Passion from the distance of a few years as Roman Tribune Titus Valerious Tauro, sent on a secret mission from Caesar Tiberius to Judea, seeks to discern the truth of the Resurrection of Jesus. In Judea Tauro finds Mary, Peter & pre-conversion Paul (in persecution mode) while also developing a major case of 'the likes' for Tabitha, a young Jewish woman in Jerusalem. The sweeping story also includes battle scenes in Germania where Tauro takes captive Brixos, a barbarian warrior who becomes his loyal servant and protector. (Yes, Dolph Lundgren in true form gets to bash a few heads throughout the movie!!) Really enjoyed this movie - the creative inquiry approach (that also includes a Roman 'C.S.I' segment of an exhumed body!), intrigue (Pontius Pilate's political machinations), the love story between Tauro & Tabitha, the flash-backs to the crucifixion from the perspective of the Roman Centurion, the humor woven throughout, the portrayal of Mary & especially Peter...great casting all around! Daniele Liotti does a great job with Dolph Lundgren, Monica Cruz et all. Faith-filled, inspirational movie that will stay with you for awhile -- the scene where Tauro asks Mary to help is especially beautiful. Highly recommend, not just at Easter for for the whole year!
