Overview

Danny Kaye spoofs medieval swashbucklers in this classic musical comedy. While the infant King of England awaits his rightful place as leader of the British Empire, his rule is usurped by Roderick (Cecil Parker), an evil pretender to the throne. Brave rebel leader The Black Fox (Edward Ashley) intends to remove Roderick from the palace and bring the crown back to its true owner, but in the meantime the baby king needs to be looked after, which is the job of a man named Hawkins (Kaye). The Black Fox travels with the little king and his rebels as they search for the key to a secret tunnel that will allow them passage into the castle. Maid Jean (Glynis Johns), one of the rebels, meets a man en route to the Castle who is to be Roderick's new jester. The rebels quickly hatch a plan: detain the jester and send Hawkins in his place; the king can then find the key and initiate the overthrow. Hawkins is able to persuade Roderick and his men that he is indeed a jester, but his espionage work gets complicated when Princess Gwendolyn (Angela Lansbury) falls in love with him, and he runs afoul of Sir Ravenhurst (Basil Rathbone), the evil genius behind Roderick. Court Jester features Kaye's famous "Pellet with the Poison" routine.

We all need a good laugh now and then and this film delivers plenty. This is Danny Kaye at his best. The film is well made, well cast and well executed in beautiful color. It contains the famous, 'The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true, the flagon with the dragon has the poison!' routine. Kayes genius at alternating between timid soul and fearless master swordsman is hilarious (as is the 'knighting ceremony'). This film is SUITABLE FOR ALL AGES and is highly recommended for a fun time.

It was the best movie I've ever seen. The sword fight left me in stitches. I highly recommend it.

I am a BIG Danny Kaye fan and have been since the 1950s when I was a child and first was exposed to this wonderful entertainer. As they say, the don't make them like they used to! I wish there was someone like him for the children of today but he ages well, thank goodness!

This "oldie" is absurdly funny, it keeps you on your toes trying to keep up with all the silly word play and craziness. Even younger kids can get a real laugh out of this one! It's my all time favorite old movie!

I watched this movie for the first time in 8th grade - my English teacher brought it as a treat for our class and we all screamed our heads off. It's suitable for all ages and incredibly funny! Enjoy!

Many fans of this magnificent jester rightly see this as the highlight movie of Danny Kaye's long running career. Beware, he is not the only one with the gift of the twisted tongue. Sylvia Fine, his wife, is the one responsible for the gift of gab introduced by an evil witch, and an honest warrior as well. "Eye of newt, tail of swine...." The words that send the terrified baby watcher swinging on the vines, hypotised into beliving that he is the greatest fencer and lover of that ever lived. Be careful when you snap your fingers, however.

Danny Kaye is one of the comedians that can make the average comedy lover laugh until it hurts. Or just love to watch it over and over just because it's got Danny Kaye in it. Any scene with Kaye in it is the best scene. The world lost a great one when Kaye died. Thank you Danny Kaye for your lasting memories.

The Court Jester is a hilarious, action packed, witty, romantic comedy just right for the whole family. I'd give it five stars because every time I watch it, I can't stop laughing till it's over.
