The second entry in George Lucas' Star Wars trilogy finds Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), the green-as-grass hero from the first film, now a seasoned space warrior. Luke's Star Wars cohorts Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) are likewise more experienced in the ways and means of battling the insidious Empire, as represented by the brooding Darth Vader (body of David Prowse, voice of James Earl Jones). And, of course, "The Force," personified by the ghost of Luke's mentor Ben Kenobi (Alec Guinness), is with them all. Retreating from Vader's minions, Luke ends up, at first, on the Ice Planet Hoth, and then the tropical Dagobah. Here he makes the acquaintance of the gnomish Yoda (voice of Frank Oz), whose all-encompassing wisdom comes in handy during the serial-like perils of the rest of the film. Before the film's open-ended climax, we are introduced to the apparently duplicitous Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) and are let in on a secret that profoundly affects both Luke and his arch-enemy, Vader. Many viewers consider this award-winning film the best of the Star Wars movies, and its special-effects bonanza was pure gold at the box office.

I have gotten my copy of The Empire Strikes Back DVD, original and special edition in one DVD release. This is very worth getting. I was not expecting the nice quality in the release, but the original version is cleaned up and restored and the sound is terriffic. The original version is on the second disc, while the 2004 version is on the first disc. There is a 2004 commentary on the first disc and there is a newely recorded commentary on the original version on the second disc. There is also a very detailed documentary, over an hour long about the original versio on the second disc. I was surprised by the release, because I was hearing that the original versions were not going to be cleaned up, so I was shocked to see it has been cleaned up. THIS IS A GREAT RELEASE!

So, I open my copy of the steenbok version of "The Empire Strikes Back" and I find only one disc. I play the disc and almost immediately, I realize that it is the 2004 remaster instead the actual theatrical version. The only reason that I bought this product was because I believed that it would include this cut. Now, I've spent money on the edition of a movie that I already have, regardless of whether it's blu-ray or not, and I honestly believe that the fact that I wasn't informed properly of the product information is something I find utterly atrocious.

One of the better sequels in a trilogy. Everything about it is good, the story, the characters and near the end especially. A lot happens in this one.

This is a one of a kind, it really is. It has the 2004 DVD release and also the original 1980 theatrical version of 'The Empire Strikes Back'. It has been cleaned up and restored, and is in 5.1 surround sound, both versions have this. Even the original. It seems Lucasfilm have changed their mind and cleaned up the originals and gave them the best DVD treatment. Also, there are a few more extra extra's. The extra's include a new (and very large) photo gallery, and a one hour (and 34 minutes) documentary on the original version. Also, a new commentary!

Nearly thirty years later, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back remains one of the greatest of the all-encompassing saga, and certinly reigns unsurpassed in the Original Trilogy. ESB not merely chronicles the beginning of Luke Skywalker's destiny as the first of a new generation of Jedi Knights, expands upon the lovable tension between Han and Leia, and contains possibly one of the greatest Star Wars lines of all time (Luke...I AM your father), but is the only episode to end entirely in a cliffhanger with Han forzen in carbonite and the fate of the galaxy uncertain. May the Force be with you!
