In anticipation of Shrek 2, the inevitable re-release of the Oscar-winning Shrek has been cleverly packaged with a welcome bonus: Shrek 3-D, a home video version of the 15-minute Shrek 4-D attraction at the Universal Studios theme park. Well worth the purchase, Shrek 3-D might also be called Shrek 1½, as it finds the ghost of Lord Farquaad rudely interrupting Shrek and Fiona's honeymoon to kidnap the bride. A wild chase by carriage, raft, and dragon-back ensues. The irreplaceable original voice cast -- Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow -- reprise their celebrated roles, and the 3-D effects (glasses are included) are state-of-the-art. One does miss the theme park ride's motion-simulation component, but accommodating parents can re-create this at home by jostling their children's seats during the climactic chase, squirting water in their faces during a waterfall plunge, and tickling their feet to simulate graveyard spiders. The disc also contains a conventional 2-D version of the film for glasses-free enjoyment; and, honestly, it's great fun even without the special effects.
