Overview

Rollercoaster was a by-product of the brief "Sensurround" craze of the 1970s. Nutsoid Timothy Bottoms sabotages an amusement-park roller coaster, killing several innocent revelers. After several other acts of terrorism, Bottoms (whose character is credited as Young Man) presents his demands to the authorities via audio tape: one million dollars, or he'll stage five roller-coaster disasters simultaneously in five different parks. Because detective Harry Calder George Segal evinces a grudging respect for the elusive extortionist, Bottoms declares that only Detective Calder will be permitted to deliver the money. Thus the stage is set for an explosive climax, which during the film's original run was accompanied by the Sensurround effect, a gimmick that electronically caused the filmgoer's chairs to begin shaking and vibrating during the "thrill scenes." As with most disaster flicks of the era, Rollercoaster is top-heavy with "guest stars," including Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Harry Guardino, and Susan Strasberg. Watch for 13-year-old Helen Hunt as Detective Calder's spunky daughter.

We got this video because it has the old Ocean View rollercoaster in it. That rollercoaster has since been demoed. It was actually destroyed before I was born, but I've heard many stories about it from my parents, and my husband remembers it, so it was neat to see it. It can also be a lesson in late 60's fashion.

I was 6 years old when it came out in the summer of 1977. When I saw this movie for my first time for, I thought this just be another low budget film, but instead it turn out cool because of all the Theme Parks. What of course was the bad guy Tim bottoms who play a role of blowing up roller coasters hating the machines we ride. Since, it was a movie who in their right mind to do something crazy as blowing up roller coasters. We need thoughs thrill rides to keep us having fun from Disney Land in California to Six flags Great America in Illinois the state I live in. The Revolution Roller Coaster I saw it first in the movie Roller Coaster, and then with a different name in National Lampoons Vacation with Chevy Chase. Keep the Roller Coaster Enthusiasts Craze year round.
