Jazz Casual: Carmen McRae

Jazz Casual: Carmen McRae

A performance by legendary jazz vocalist Carmen McRae with the Vince Guaraldi Trio is captured in this rare 1962 television appearance on Jazz Casual, music critic Ralph J. Gleason's renowned series for National Educational Television. Born in Harlem on April 8, 1922, McRae was known as an outstanding song stylist whose main strength lay in her phrasing and interpretation of lyrics. From an early age she studied and excelled at piano. In fact, her first recording was as a pianist with the Ellington Orchestra in the mid-'40s. Crucial personal influences over her style as a singer came from composer-arranger Irene Wilson Kitching, who became McRae's mentor, and from vocalist Billie Holiday, who helped McRae shape her sound. This program is in black-and-white.
