Based on the novel by Dodie Smith (101 Dalmatians), director Tim Fywell's comic romance follows 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain (Romola Garai) and her quirky family as they attempt to make the best of their meager existence in a crumbling English castle. While her father (Bill Nighy) has been struggling for over a decade to repeat the success of his debut novel, her beautiful sister Rose (Rose Byrne) frequently voices her displeasure with their current situation, and nudist stepmother Topaz (Tara Fitzgerald) proves little help at much of anything. The arrival of American landlord Simon Cotton (Henry Thomas) and his brother Neil (Marc Blucas) provides a glimmer of hope as the initially repelled Rose soon takes a liking to Simon and the two arrange to marry. Lost in the chaotic shuffle of marriage plans and increasingly complicated relationships, the hapless Cassandra soon begins to blossom into womanhood as she experiences aspects of life that were heretofore unknown to her.

Somehow this movie makes me wonder if the directors/screenwriters had read the book at all when they made this movie. If you have to spend any money, spend it on the book!

If you have read the novel by Dodie Smith please indulge yourself in this movie, you won't be dissapointed. The movie illustrates Cassandra beautifully while still maintaining the flow of her journal entries. Although the ending will always dissapoint me, the movie sympathizes with Cassandra's situation. A commendeable movie that any one will enjoy!

IF you have read the book, don't waste your time with the movie; with such a small resemblance to the classic and a movie that falls short of any direction....you'll find yourself asking the same question-' I can't believe I sat through the whole movie'.

This movie was enjoyable. I myself have not read the novel, so I don't know if it lives up to Dodie Smith's fan's expectations, but I know it lived up to mine. Although the ending is disappointing, this is definately a movie to sit through. Romula Garai gives a good performance as the youngest daughter of a struggling writer, and her fictional sister is perfect as the would-be socialite struggling with the bonds of poverty. My advice: don't go into it expecting too much, and don't nitpick it's shortcomings. Just enjoy it for what it is: a quirky comedy.
