''Fleeing By Night'' may have been produced with hopes of cashing in on the success of ''Farewell, My Concubine,'' but it's quite different in some major ways, and excellent in its own right. Some plot points are similar, but this is a real gay love story, in which the feelings ARE requited, and a very romantic and personal story, with no political points being made. The movie is extremely well-made, lushly filmed and scored, and the ending is very sad, but also deeply romantic and beautiful. I highly recommend this, as well as ''Lan Yu,'' a contemporary Chinese gay love story, that's also sad, romantic and very beautiful.
