The PBS American Masters program Ella Fitzgerald: Something to Live For comes to DVD from Fox Lorber. The original aspect ratio is preserved with a 1.33:1 full frame transfer, and the mono soundtrack is adequate for the historic recordings. The chaptering offers scene access to each segment of her life story, but not to the 13 individual song performances. The extra features include 20 minutes of additional interviews with accompanists Hank Jones and Paul Smith, as well as bassist Keter Betts, friend Jim Blackman, and vocalist Johnny Mathis. Also includes two classic Memorex commercials and Fitzgerald's discography. This disc is recommended for jazz history fans as well as collectors of the American Masters program.
