This first set of Cadfael mysteries captures the essence of the books, which are marvelous. They, and this first series, take you into the world of medieval England, with the added attraction of a logical, knowledgable detective, in the person of Cadfael, ably played by Derek Jacobi. Sean Pertwee as the soon-to-be assistant sheriff is perfectly cast, which makes the later collections less than desirable--another, less able actor takes his place after this first series. Ellis Peter's books are unusual in blending the modern detective story with the social and political landscape of the European Middle Ages, and these film versions transport you there. Thoroughly enjoyable!
