Once again, Image Entertainment has managed to put together an incredibly generous DVD for an obscure film with Blood Freak. This disc was produced by the fanatical archivists at Something Weird Video and, as a result, it is truly a 'everything but the kitchen sink' affair. The video isn't terribly impressive due to the rough, low-budget quality of Blood Freak's cinematography but it still looks better than the many budget-label videotapes of this film that have circulated over the years. The audio is often garbled due to the poor recording quality of the original sound elements but the Dolby mono treatment it gets on this disc is a step up from the film's past video incarnations. The supplements are where this DVD truly shines because the producers have unearthed a wealth of supplements that add a few hours to the disc total running time. First up there are a variety of short subjects, a couple of them humorous items tossed in for camp value (kitschy educational shorts on drug addiction, turkeys and Thanksgiving) and a few of them featuring the film's stars: "The Walls Have Eyes" is a memorably bizarre combination of film noir and softcore shenanigans featuring leading man Steve Hawkes and "Brad Grinter, Nudist" is a jaw-dropping nudist propaganda short in which the film's director literally lets it all hang out. There is also a thorough gallery of trailers that includes the original spots for Blood Freak and Flesh Feast (another Grinter epic) plus several other title for tangentially related horror titles (Blood Feast, The Dorm That Dripped Blood, etc.). In short, Image Entertainment has put together a definitive presentation for a film that most b-movie fans thought was completely forgotten and that makes this disc a must for trash movie aficionados.
