Director: Bernardo Bertolucci Cast: Thandie Newton, David Thewlis, Claudio Santamaria

DVD (Wide Screen / Pan & Scan / Dolby 5.1 / Stereo)

Bernardo Bertolucci's atmospheric love story Besieged comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic image preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.66:1 and is preferable to the standard full-frame transfer. The closed-captioned soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a theatrical trailer as well as cast and crew filmographies. The widescreen transfer captures the stunning photography, making this disc worth a look, even if it is light on extras.

The first time I saw this movie on the IFC Channel I was blown away. The two leading actors make this movie truly a gem to watch. It keeps you in suspense as to whether love will prevail or fizzle. I have always been a great admirer of David Thewlis and I thought his performance was wonderful and charming. Who wouldn't fall for a man that went to such lengths for love and sacrifice so much? Thandie Newton was perfect in her role. The movie couldn't have asked for a better leading lady. This is a great movie for anyone who loves a good story.

I found Thandie Newton sexy as usual. However, I don't find that there was such a monumental thing as a romance would happen when she has a husband in prison! Plus, the reclusive pianist isn't such a catch: ugly, decrepit in dress, playing at the damn piano all day.
