About the Author

Sandra Boynton is a beloved American cartoonist, children’s author, songwriter, and highly sporadic short film director. Boynton has written and illustrated sixty children’s books and seven general audience books, including five New York Times bestsellers. More than 70 million of her books have been sold—“mostly to friends and family,” she says. Boynton has also written and produced six albums of unconventional children’s music; three of her albums have been certified Gold (over 500,000 copies sold), and Philadelphia Chickens, nominated for a Grammy, has gone Platinum (over one million copies sold). Boynton has also written and directed eleven short musical films and two animated shorts, including “Tyrannosaurus Funk,” sung by Samuel L. Jackson, which won the 2018 Grand Prize for Best Children’s Animation Short from the Rhode Island International Film Festival. In 2008, Boynton received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Cartoonists Society. Boynton has four perfect children and an equally perfect granddaughter. Her Connecticut studio is in a converted barn that has perhaps the only hippopotamus weathervane in America.

Michael Ford, Sandra Boynton’s esteemed collaborator on Philadelphia Chickens and Rhinoceros Tap, is a classically trained composer and pianist, with a long detour in Progressive Rock performance. He and his family live down the road a spell from Sandy.

Holy cow! One of the all-time best children's music albums ever - in my humble opinion. The book with the songs and the lyrics is great - grandpa can now play the kid's favorite songs on piano. My favorite is Pots and Pans and my 7-year-old loves Bear Feet.

This hardcover book comes with a CD recording of the songs, like Boynton's previous "Philadelphia Chickens". The book isn't too great on its own - the music is really the fun part. These are excellent recordings by fine musicians, with full "real" instrumental arrangements - no synthesizers like on some cheap recordings for children. Boynton's words are fun, and many songs have catchy rhythms and repeated hooks that really appeal to kids. Boynton's likeable cartoon animals illustrate the crazy songs and add to the appeal for all ages. Our family didn't like this recording when the kids were preschoolers - it was a bit too complex and demanding to listen to. Now at age 7 our kids love it, and want to play the music and read along in the scores, and they love the jokes. We parents find it very funny too, with many good parodies of Broadway show songs, rock and blues and other popular genres. Favourites include "Dog Train", "Cow Planet" and "Pots and Pans". A winner for kids from kindergarten to grade 4 or so.

I purchased this after my Daughter brought it home from the public library and fell in love with the music. She uses this is her goodnight music every night. I recommend this for anyone with a child who likes to listen to music when they fall asleep.

Dog Train is simply brilliant. We've owned it now for 4 years and it still gets heavy rotation in the car's CD player...and our son is 11. It's endearingly goofy and musically accomplished. John Ondrasik ('Superman' and '100 Years To Live') singing 'Penguin's Lament' is alone worth the price of the CD. Like a classic cartoon that offers entertainment and humor for ALL ages (think 'The Flinstones'), everyone will enjoy these silly songs.

As a preschool teacher, I am sick to death of insipid, brainless children's music (hello Wiggles!!!!). This cd is a favorite in my classroom with the adults as well as with the children. My favorite is the Penguin Lament. Classic!!!!

My 3 year old never tires of this CD or the Philadelphia Chickens CD. He loves 'Dogtrain' and asks me to play 'Tantrum' every morning driving to school, but he also loves 'Evermore,' 'Cows' and 'Dragonfire.' I've also given this as gifts many times. This CD is a huge hit. Mom and Dad love it too considering we aren't Wiggles people.

I had no doubts that Dog Train would be fabulous, and I was not disappointed. With a fourteen-month-old daughter, I confess that all three compilations are more for me than for her right now, but they give us something fun, meaningful, and exciting to listen to during the day. It's difficult to choose a favorite from the album, as each song is unique in its own way. However, 'Dragonfire' is probably one of the best new children's songs I've heard in a long time. It highlights the significance of a child's spirit/soul as something that burns brightly within, something that is available any time for strength, courage, and support. The song sounds beautiful, with lovely harmonies and skillful playing, but its words are what make it stand out. I hope Boyton will consider drawing this song as one of her board books. Get Dog Train! And while you're add it, order Rhinoceros Tap and Philadelphia Chickens too. Children are never too young to start listening to music, and it's almost guaranteed that parents will enjoy these albums too.

I love it when my children and I can enjoy music together. We have all three of Boynten's musical books and we hope she continues to produce these high quality pieces for years to come.

My daughter just got this as a gift and admittedly, mommy has listened to it before her! (She'll get to hear it later today) Like 'Philadelphia Chickens' and 'Rhinoceros' Tap' before it, this is a great disc that can be appreciated by both children and their grown-ups while exposing kids to a variety of music genres. Highly recommended for the toddler to preschooler set--a great gift idea. If you are looking to get this CD/Book and DON'T yet have Phildadelphia Chickens, would strongly recommend adding that to the cart too, especially if you have a little Broadway in your bones. Rhinoceros'Tap is good too, but is all sung by the same guy, so not quite as much fun as the other two. Enjoy!
