Not too long ago, lethal infections were feared in the Western world. Since that time, many countries have undergone a transformation from disease cesspools to much safer, healthier habitats. Starting in the mid-1800s, there was a steady drop in deaths from all infectious diseases, decreasing to relatively minor levels by the early 1900s. The history of that transformation involves famine, poverty, filth, lost cures, eugenicist doctrine, individual freedoms versus state might, protests and arrests over vaccine refusal, and much more.Today, we are told that medical interventions increased our lifespan and single-handedly prevented masses of deaths. But is this really true?Dissolving Illusions details facts and figures from long-overlooked medical journals, books, newspapers, and other sources. Using myth-shattering graphs, this book shows that vaccines, antibiotics, and other medical interventions are not responsible for the increase in lifespan and the decline in mortality from infectious diseases. If the medical profession could systematically misinterpret and ignore key historical information, the question must be asked, "What else is ignored and misinterpreted today?"Perhaps the best reason to know our history is so that the worst parts are never repeated.

Everyone should read this book before deciding on what to do with vaccines. I wish there was more dr's like her Dr. Humphries.

I am generally skeptical about many things, so I approached this book with a healthy degree of an attitude requiring much proof. The authors outdid themselves. They have backed up their research and claims with 809 citations and dozens of graphs and charts. To their credit, they never say the words "do not get vaccinated," but the discerning reader will likely never willingly succumb to the needle again after reading this book. The historical and statistical evidences along with the quotes of medical professionals who were either lazy (with their scholarship) or intended to deceive (probably for financial gain or fame) or were unwilling to buck the system because of their fear of men, is overwhelming. The authors proved to me beyond all reasonable doubt that the following vaccines are not worth much (if anything) and may be detrimental to one's health: smallpox, polio, whooping cough, measles, and other diseases. They share the history of these various diseases and how they came to be mostly eradicated from the U.S. by cleanliness and diet before the respective vaccines were ever introduced. If this book has any weaknesses it is this: the authors did not complete an in-depth study on the history of influenza and whether flu vaccines are really effective or not (that is why I bought the book). Nevertheless, I'm glad I read the book; it was very helpful and interesting and I intend to recommend it to my family and friends. Lastly, the authors provide a chapter about practical ways to fight these various diseases (and others) by citing quotes from documented scientific studies and evidences from history.
