Belle’s Tale (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) #1 by Mallory Reaves was a short quick read that’s adapted from the recently released movie. I loved the artwork. It’s a manga comic so some human characteristics are always exaggerated. Case in point: Gaston’s legs. Holy cow, they were thick! Not at all as handsome as the movie version, but come to think of it, he does boast that he is as big as a barge. Since this is in Belle’s point of view, not all areas of the story are covered in this version. One would have to know the story and have seen the motion picture movie to fill in the blanks. Even knowing the story by heart, this felt a bit jilted and empty for me. Overall, even though the artwork was entertaining, I just can’t say the story was anything amazing. Meant for middle grade audiences, I understand the need to lighten it up a bit but in a way that took away from the overall substance of the story.
Belle's Tale (Disney Beauty and the Beast, #1) by Mallory Reaves The combination of Manga and Disney's new adaptation of the Beauty and the Beast story. With added pages showing drawing line work and other aspects of the story. the new adaptation of the story adds to the Disney original with a back story of her mother and that of the beast that changes the tone of the story. The Manga drawing pattern blends the original Disney concept and the new artist changes to the story in the theaters.
