As Shea describes his conflict between the safe, traditional business career favored by his parents and a secret desire for alternative expression, he divulges the triumphs and setbacks that have marked his journey as well as his personal shortcomings. As he meets and marries the love of his life, grieves for his parents and in-laws, laments over losing his job on the same day Barack Obama gains his, battles alcohol abuse, and struggles to regain his dignity and reinvent himself, Shea bares the soul of an imperfect man whose frequent departures from the script of life ultimately led him to identify his one true calling.
The charming essays in Discovering My Artichoke will inspire others to lead their lives with fortitude, courage, and faith, but most importantly, to follow their dreams, for that is how we all find happiness.

About the Author
Most Helpful Customer Reviews
Discovering My Artichoke is a thoughtful, funny (sometimes downright hilarious), and poignant account of one man's journey through life. A series of essays, not necessarily in chronological order, covers many aspects of the author's life, from growing up in New Jersey, his family, schooling, and jobs, to sports, friends, love, marriage, illness, and death. I alternately laughed and cried over the adventures (and misadventures) of Jack, and his family and friends. You are left with the feeling that the author is a caring, loving, sometimes irreverant human being for whom life and the important people in it are precious. I'm grateful that he wanted to share the adventures with all of us. Best of all, Discovering My Artichoke is beautifully written, and worth reading for the quality of the writing alone. I was touched by the humor, and love, evident in every story.
